Understanding ecosystem for

Health and Well being

1
Technological innovation for
ecosystem and health
This theme is to encourage people to
find local-level problems and take
initiatives for developing local
technological solutions from the
perspectives of green technology,
appropriate technology, information
and communication technology or
improvising traditional technology
based on the principles of frugal
innovation.

Title: Air management for healthier Lifestyle

Through this project we are trying to find

small scale, cheap and do-able solutions
to ecological problems which are
excessive in our local area. Thus we
have decided to take the topic of “Air
Pollution”.

Taj Mahal

One of the Seven Wonders of the World and UNESCO World

Heritage Site, the Taj Mahal has been battling pollution, be it of
air or water caused by industries, for years.
Acid Rain

Acid rain is made up of highly acidic water droplets due to air emissions, most
specifically the disproportionate levels of sulphur and nitrogen emitted by
vehicles and manufacturing processes. It is often called acid rain as this concept
contains many types of acidic precipitation.
The acidic deposition takes place in two ways: wet and dry. Wet deposition is
any form of precipitation which removes acids from the atmosphere and places
them on the surface of the earth. In the absence of precipitation, dry deposition
of polluting particles and gases sticks to the ground through dust and smoke.

16
Most of us think of rain as something refreshing and beneficial to the
environment, but actually not all types of rain are good. Acid rain is a
type of rain that is harmful for the environment.
Acid rain includes rain, snow, hail, fog, or dew that is high in acid
pollutants, especially sulphuric and nitric acid. Acid rain is caused by
emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which reacts with
the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids.
Acid Rain has been shown to have a bad impact on forests, water as
well as soil. It kills insects and marine life-forms as well as causes
damage to buildings and has drastic impacts on human health.
Acid rain also makes rivers, lakes and other water bodies poisonous.
Many buildings and monuments have also been damaged by acid rain
since the acid damages calcium carbonate stone.
While nothing can be done with regard to the natural causes of acid
rain, we can teak steps to reduce the man-made factors. Towards this
end, we should opt for cleaner forms of energy, such as the use of
solar power, re-recycling of natural resources and by planting more &
more trees.

Gargoyles of Notre Dame

This gargoyle, on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, has pits and rounded
edges, which are the results of acid rain. Acid rain damages statues and
architecture in developed nations.

Solution
Starting the initiative form
school level our goal is to
encourage students to make
miniature smoke absorbing
machine on their own and
put them in their
classrooms

Smoke Absorber

20
Materials Required to make smoke absorber
● Cardboard ● Wires
● DC motor ● Hose
● 9v battery ● On and off switch
● Plastic bottle ● Mechanical fan
● Tubes ● 9V battery connector
● Glue gun (glue stick) ● Others (scissors, cutter, and
etc.)

Activated charcoal absorption
Each pound (450g) of activated carbon will adsorb an average of 33 - 1/3% of its
weight in these compounds. G - Good. Satisfactory capacity. Each pound of
activated carbon will adsorb an average of 16.7% (1/6) of its weight in this
compound.

In addition to intrinsically having the absorption performance of activated carbon,

BAC has various features: Small particle, high fill capability, high flowability, high
purity, low dust, high strength, high wear resistance, narrow particle size
distribution

Maximum CO2 sorption capacity on the synthesized activated carbon is found to be

80 mg CO2 per gram adsorbent. Maximum CO2 sorption capacity on the
synthesized activated carbon is found to be 80 mg CO2 per gram adsorbent.

What are the Future plans for this Project
The Smoke absorber is a project which can be easily made by anyone and because
of that, it can be produced on a mass scale as a game in which the students can
customize their smoke absorber and assemble it on their own using an instruction
manual.

All the parts (batteries, wires, fans, charcoal) of the project can be manufactured on
large scale.

This implies that the project can be made in both ways (handmade or manufactured
in factories).

23
24
Q1. How did you get the idea of a smoke absorber?

Answer: The problem of air pollution is a very local problem in our area.
We are used to the fact of our school closing because of air pollution
which increases especially at the time of Diwali. That is where the initial
idea of the smoke absorber came from, it is also a project which can be
made by students in our school. We first made this in 6th grade (2019) at
that point we didn’t have the idea of adding activated charcoal in it. So it
was a smoke absorber, not an air purifier. Adding activated charcoal
amplifies its advantages and makes it more useful.

25
Q2. Can it be made by the student body?
One of the for all intents and purposes main properties of the project
actually is that it can be easily made by anybody and the actually main
aspect of our project generally is that we kind of are targeting students to
mostly make this for their classrooms. in a big way.

26
Q3. Does activated charcoal have any harmful effects?
Answer: No, the amount of activated charcoal we are using and the means of it is
not harmful.

27
Q4. What is the future scope for this Project ?
Answer: This project is simple and can be manufactured on large scale as
a game in which the students can assemble the smoke absorber and
customize it as they please.

28
Q5. How long it will last?
Answer: Since the batteries and the charcoal can be replaced in the smoke absorber
the model should be able to last a long time if kept in a safe place.

29
Q6. How much does it cost to make it ?
Answer: One model of the smoke absorber can be made in a budget of
Rs.500 .the plan is to keep 2 smoke absorber in one room each means the
purification of one room will cost about Rs.1000.

30
Q7. Do we have to change some parts after use ?
Answer: After a while we have to change the batteries and the activated
charcoal other than that no other material is needed to be changed or
replaced.

31
Q8. How long would it take to make it??
Answers: It will take approximately 1 hour to make a single model of
smoke absorber. Each class consist of almost 40 students ,each group can
consists of maximum 5 students to finish one model.

32
Q9. What is the working Principle of Smoke Absorber?
Answer:This is a model that is used to filter the interior air to keep the
environment clean by removing bacterial fumes, combustion products, bad
steam, odor, heat, and grease. It has a mechanical fan that pulls out
harmful fumes and gases with a carbon filter.

33
Q10. What is the future scope for this Project ?
Answer: This project is simple and can be manufactured on large scale as
a game in which the students can assemble the smoke absorber and
customize it as they please.
