What is in-text citation?

1. In a group, discuss how you understand

the in-text citation.
2. Write the definition on the sheet.
3. One member reads the definition from
the group
(the use of the Internet or other resources is
prohibited)
When should quotations be used in APA?

Use direct quotations rather than paraphrasing:

 when reproducing an exact definition
 when an author has said something memorably or succinctly
 when you want to respond to exact wording (e.g., something someone
said).
What is difference between Narrative and
Parenthetical in-text citations?

In-text citations have two formats: parenthetical and narrative.

•In parenthetical citations, the author's name and publication date appear in
parentheses.
•In narrative citations, the author's name is incorporated into the text as part of the
sentence and the year follows in parentheses.

requires actual work” (Crawford, 2017, p. 81).
Narrative:  According to Crawford (2017), “Being a

Correct answers

Parenthetical:  “Learning is a process that leads to change, which

occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for
improved performance and future learning” (Smith et al., 2022, p. 8).
Narrative:  According to Smith et al. (2017), “Learning is a process
that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and
increases the potential for improved performance and future
learning” (p. 8).
How do you quote more than 40 words in APA?

 The following is a list of the unique formatting that is needed for block quotations:
1. Block quotations start on their own line.
2. The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new
paragraph, and is double spaced.
3. Block quotations are not surrounded by any quotation marks.
4. The punctuation at the end of the block quotation goes before the citation.
5. The ending citation is included on the last line of the block quotation.
6. The text after the block quotation begins on its own line, with no indentation. You should not end
a paragraph with a block quotation because any quotation you use as evidence in your writing
should be followed by analysis in your own words as part of the same paragraph.
