 Youth for Seva (YFS), was founded in by Dr. R.

Balasubramaniam in April
2007.
 It is a nation-wide volunteering movement that inspires youth to volunteer,
and provides them with meaningful opportunities to serve the community.
 The goal of YFS is to support schools, destitute shelters, government
hospitals and other organizations in the social sector through volunteers
who can help them mitigate some of their shortcomings and challenges.
 Volunteering is made easy and customized to the individual's interests,
time availability and skill sets.
 YFS aims to create positive change in the society through the culture of
volunteering.
The Vision and Mission of Youth for Seva is as follows:
Youth for Seva has designed various intervention programs in education by conducting
multiple programs. The programs range from foundational projects such as voluntary
teaching in government schools, providing school kits to underprivileged students,
organizing events such as Chiguru and Vidyachetana and many more.

An innovative and highly beneficial bridge to empower under privileged children

with all resources they need for education. YFS collaborates with volunteers and
recycling unused papers and books.

Doctors for Seva is a Health needs initiative from Youth For Seva.
We are a team of medical professionals, hospitals and medical colleges willing to
provide our medical services to the underprivileged and marginalized class of society
on a voluntary basis.

YFS is working relentlessly towards building our women power.  Skill development,
financial empowerment and independence to create real-time change in the lives of
rural women and YFS has worked with them to set up small-scale garment factories.
 Chhote Scientist is an initiative to kindle passion for Science among school going children with the help of
"Easy to make" and "fun to learn" scientific toys.
 It encourages students to think beyond the textbooks ,by bridging the gap between academic knowledge
and real life applications of Science.
Vision: To encourage students to think beyond the textbook ,by
bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real life
application of science.

Mission: Development of scientific attitude among the students

Strengthening the science fundamentals and principles.
Chhote Scientists 4S Philosophy:
 Simple:”Science is free, technology is costly”.Keeping this is mind,we teach through
toys/experiments that are easy to make from readily available or waste material and fun to
play with.

 Scalable:Anybody and everybody can be a teacher. With a small amount of appropriate

training ,everyone can learn and teach basic concepts of science using simple
toys/experiments.

 Sustainable:Does not require expensive and specific infrastructure ,only a willingness to

help and teach is needed.

 Sharable:Available to all.The more it is used, the more effective it is.KPIT has made this
methodology freely available to everyone who is interested to help.
Flow of Chhote Scientist:
 Orientation on the “Chhote Scientist” programme consisted of a brief presentation
on what the programme is all about, detailed information on the Youth For Seva
Organization and what it stands for.
 The first training session was conducted by a volunteer from the Youth For Seva
team who explained all the experiments based on the topics Sound and Pressure.
 The second training session was done by the lead volunteers who briefed the
students about the experiments on the topics Light and Chemistry.
 The first two sessions were solely conducted for training purpose and this was
conducted for YFS lead volunteers in JSS Academy of Technical Education.
 Four sessions were conducted on four different days and on four different themes
at the allotted government school(KPS Kaggalipura).
 In this way all the four themes were taught to the students with lot of interest and
enthusiasm.
Experiences:
 Teaching is indeed a strenuous task which requires a lot of effort.
 Team work was definitely one of the key reasons as to why this
programme was even successful.
 All of us worked together as a team, helped each other in learning the
different experiments, bounced off each other’s ideas and backed each
other up when faced by puzzling questions posed by inquisitive
students.
 This definitely helped in controlling the class and managing to grab the
attention of all the students.
 The sessions were very interactive which helped the students to
understand the objectives easily and implement the knowledge they
learnt in class on a practical scale giving them a more hands on
experience.
Challenges faced:
 The expectations of the teaching atmosphere was initially thought to be very
challenging as we expected a definitive language barrier between us and the
students as it is pretty difficult to communicate certain scientific terminologies in
Kannada and more difficult to explain the same and if they would be able to grasp
the concepts being taught.
 However it was in turn a very nice surprise to know that the students were very
good at communicating with us in English and were also well versed in the
concepts we taught them as they were pretty interactive too.
 Controlling the class and managing to grab the attention of all the students was
little challenging as they were very keen to learn the concepts that we were about
to teach.
Feedback:
 The conduction of more Chhote Scientist programmes would definitely be
extremely beneficial to the students as something that the government school
students face is the lack of resources/equipment to perform more science
oriented experiments.
 Provision of this required material would help the students to implement the
knowledge learnt in their classrooms by giving them a hands on experience to
learn practically.
 Also, conduction of more Science fairs’ at their school premises would help
pique their interest in the field of science and technology.
 The program was conducted in a well planned way and I really liked teaching
process.
Volunteering Future:
 I am very grateful for this opportunity to be a part of the Chhote
Scientist program organized by the Youth for Seva Organization as
it helped me discern my passion for volunteering.
 It made me realize that volunteering helps counteract the effects of
stress ,anxiety and anger and provides a boost of self confidence
and self esteem whilst providing you with a sense of purpose as we
are giving back to the society.
 Therefore I see myself volunteering a lot more in the future and
would like to be a part of more Youth for Seva Volunteering
programs.
THANK YOU!
