EXECUTORY SUMMARY
JagdishSheth School of Management, Bangalore organized the Social Immersion
Program-The main purposes of this program is to develop the attitude of ‘giving back’
to society which enables us to identify the problems in the society and think of a
possible solutions to solve that problem. SIP helps students to identify the problems in
the community and enables them to identify their social problems through research.
Students learn to make blueprint for the solutions for the social problems through a
Techno Economic Viability (TEV) study.

JagdishSheth School of Management has tied up with Youth For Seva and other NGO’s
who works with the students through the program. Youth For Seva has made several
volunteering models for individuals to get into the community service. YFS aims to
create active changes in the society, through the culture of volunteering programs.

The program consists of a ten days commitment with an NGO. The students of this
institute divided into many clusters headed by institute professors and one group leader
from each clusters. The clusters consist of first and second year undergraduate students
often members each. Under the guidance of YFS, the students in our cluster choose the
area of interest for teaching the government school students through Google forms. The
different areas are we need to teach is (NMMS) National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship
Examination, Civic Awareness and Spoken English. YFS allotted the government
school for each student on the basis of their localities in the organized basis. Training
session also conducted by the YFS to the students. Each government school, four
students should be appointed. From that two students for teaching the NMMS exam,
one student for civic awareness and one student for spoken English. We are allowed to
teach the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

NMMS is a scholarship exam conducted by the government every year for the class 8th
grade students. The purpose of NMMS is to reduce the dropout rate by encouraging
children to continue their studies. The students who clear this exam are offered a
scholarship every month until they complete their class 12th. Proper civic education
helps children about their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Civic education
empowers all of us to be well informed about our duties, as an active citizens gives us
the opportunity to change the world. Participation in civic engagement activities can
help youth become better informed about current events. The purpose of spoken
English class for students improves social skills. English is important for students
because it broadens their mind and develops skills, improve the quality of life by
providing job opportunities.

This activity is a very responsible activity as we all know about it which involves
student’s life. Even they can be inspired from anyone of us and take us a role model
and work on it. NGO wants us to report on time in school and we should stay until the
school closes. NGO also wants us to submit the log sheet and photos on the daily basis
so that none of us want to bunk this activity for the sake of their comfort. In that log
sheet, each volunteer should mention the timings and subject as we teach it in the class
so that it is very easy for them to monitoring us.

FINDINGS AND RECCOMENDATIONS:

Many volunteers from our college experienced the language barrier. The volunteers
were comfortable with English and their regional languages as we all come from
different regions. On the other hand, most of the government school students are only
comfortable with their regional language that is Kannada and a little bit of English. So
that we suggest that the school authority should focus on teaching English which is
considered as a global language. In this report we recommend few ways to teach
English effectively to children of Government school:

1) One of the fundamental problems that children of government school face are
tenses. Their tenses are pretty weak, due to which their sentence framing is
poor. Teaching those tenses through the conventional blackboard method will
help a lot in teaching them correct usage.
2) Newspapers are one of the most informative sources of current news. English
newspapers can be an essential source of language for children of government
schools. Besides being affordable, the language used in publications, is pretty
simple, which an amateur can understand.
3) Teachers should communicate a lot with students in English. Nothing is useful
than proper communication as far as learning spoken English is concerned.
Motivate them to frame English lines to converse.
4) English NCERT books are pretty cheap and are widely used in the curriculum.
Make the children read aloud the sentences of the book to teach them the
subject effectively.
Some of the volunteers from our cluster also experienced the transportation problem.
They used to travel daily with their personal transport to report on time in the school
which was not budget friendly for some us. We recommend the NGO should take
action on it and check whether the government school is near or far away from their
locality.

There were some students who were not at all interested in learning and sometimes they
used to spoil the atmosphere of the whole class and because of them even those who
have always wanted to learn could not learn. We recommend that we have to separate
the uninterested students from interested students so that we will teach them effectively
and efficiently. Another way to handle the uninterested students is the idea is to make
the lesson interesting which is difficult in some inherently boring subjects with a
prescribed syllabus. Then you try to relate the work to their life. Area to painting and
the like. But it does always work. Nothing sparks the attention of students better than an
entertaining story, fiction or real. The more closely the story to the heart of the students,
the longer you will have their attention. It will be even better if you can relate your
story to the topic you will be teaching. If students are able to relate an abstract concept
to an everyday occurrence, they will be more interested and attentive. The details will
then automatically fall in place for them. As a teacher, it is important that you help
them tread on the path of learning rather than force-feed them information.
ABOUT SDG
              (Sustainable development goals )
So SDG means we have to be sustainable in our development and try to harm nature as less
as possible in 2015 the world leaders agreed on 17 SDG goals the aim is to create a better
world by 2030 and the project is in full flow at moment from 2015 up to more work has been
done than ever before these are very encouraging signs for not only the nature but even for
the world this directly means we can live in a much more clean and peaceful place with very
less pollution as well.
The 17 goals are-
1. 1.. Zero poverty
2. No hunger
3. Healthy Lifestyle
4. Quality education
5. Gender discrimination
6. Clean water
7. Decent work for people with economic growth of nation
8. Industry, innovation and infrastructure of nation
9. Reduced unevenness
10. Sustainable cities and communities
11. Responsible consumption and production
12. Climate change action
13. Good marine life

These are the current 13 goals which are even being supported by the United Nations as these
are very basic but very important things for mankind.
The SDG are the draft to achieve a better and more sustainable future for everyone. SDG
address the global challenges everyone faces like poverty, climate change, peace and justice.
We all should try to support and promote it as much as we can because in the end it is even
our planet so let’s make it a better place for ourselves and everyone as-well.
Justification to the Social Problem
Social Immersion Project helps students to be better citizens by knowing, understanding and
finding sustainable solutions for pressing community needs. Students become socially
conscious and ethically responsible once they go through this immersion process. It helps
students better understand their own competence, leading to more self-confidence and a can-
do attitude that can spread to their academic pursuits and work. Taking part in Socially
relevant projects teaches students valuable skills like ability to follow instructions, teamwork,
problem solving, networking etc.

I was allocated to MarsurGHPS for 10 days to accomplish my Social Immersion Program. I

trained NMMS (National Means-Cum Merit Scholarship) subject to 8th class students. I had
a great experience teaching them as well learning from them too. For every question solved,
they found many easiest and correct logical solutions. This widened my logical thinking and
reasoning too. Being a native Kannada speaker, I couldn’t translate many English words into
Kannada. Then I learnt a lot of words & mathematical terms in Kannada through googling
and students as well.

Students were asked to attend NMMS classes at 8:00 am along with their usual classes due to
their busy schedule. They were so dedicated and punctual as I witnessed few students
skipping their breakfast to attend the class. I learnt the true meaning of Unity in Diversity
when I saw the children who are from different walks of life, different cultural backgrounds
and even some language barriers they sit together, study together, wear the same uniform and
share the same meal.

Lack of academic sources were the issue over there and there were no proper sports supplies
and a sports room but the coach was present before the school starts and there were no
Playing Time Period for the students and most of the students were proactive and they never
felt tired by playing kabaddi, volleyball, cricket and they were happily attending the classes
of NMMS. The children were so peace minded and chill with everyone but the teachers
weren’t on time and few teachers were attending the classes others were not seen at the
school. The principal was present only for one day at our 8 days of work later; students were
looking up on to us. I liked it the most and they were so sad to say goodbye to us when we
were done with our work. They were that interested for our classes. We also felt like we are
the teachers. But that’s true for 8 days. When I was teaching them I felt so responsible and
took every chance to interact with them and to be indulged with their thoughts. I gave them
few activities everyday to make their boring school life joyful. The washrooms were a
problematic quite a bit and the punctuality of teachers wasn’t up to the mark. I don’t blame
only teachers but students were also irregular but the teachers should be at the right time to
advice students. Hence the journey of mine as a service was great and joyful and learnt about
many things like responsibilities, discipline, punctuality etc.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The 10 days I spent working for the social immersion programme were not easy yet it was
one of the most exciting tasks ever. Teaching students is not an easy job specially when you
are not a person who knows how to teach or transfer knowledge. The time I spent teaching
the children NMMS was full of fun and challenges. I would say it was more fun than a
challenge but a little bit challenging too.

There were few problems which made teaching a little bit challenging and difficult to cope up
with. I would not say that these cannot be resolved at all, but they changes will be best for the
development.

The first thing that built a barrier in teaching is the Language. On the first 2-3 days it was
quite difficult for me to teach them as language was a major problem. I was comfortable with
both Hindi and English but the kids were only comfortable with Kannada and a little bit of
English. Since only few of them knew English and Hindi, it was difficult for me to explain
them all the questions. I used to talk in English and the students who knew English used to
explain other students in Kannada. I think the school authority should focus on teaching other
languages too along with kannada. But I would say that the students were quite interested in
learning and hence tried to cooperate with me which is a very good thing.

Another thing that I would like to shed light on is the size of classrooms. Even though it is
not a big issue but due to small size of the classrooms, it was difficult for all the students to
attend the class together. Many of them used to fight for benches and the space which made it
quite difficult for me to manage. Also because of this many were not able to attend the class
and used to miss it or had to stand outside. This could be changed for better results.

I think most of the students were well behaved and were always excited to learn and do fun
activities. I saw many students always asking be doubts and the willingness among them to
solve questions by themselves and being excited about getting the right answers. But there
were some students who were not at all interested in learning and sometimes they used to
spoil the atmosphere of the whole class and because of them even those who have always
wanted to learn could not learn. I think the course I was teaching should have been only for
students who are willing to learn and really interested, so that they can get proper attention
without any disturbance.

Along with these there is one more problem and that is of transportation. We used to travel
daily with our personal transport to report on time in the school and the school used to be far
and hence it was not easy as well as budget friendly to reach the school. Since even we are
students and we did not have enough money to spend daily on transportation as well as food
near the school. Some of the school used to provide midday meal to the students, teachers as
well as us but there were others too in which no food was provided and hence we had to
spend the money from our own pockets which was not easy. This was one more problem
which was seen during our social immersion program.

WHAT TOUCHED ME THE MOST

1 Tanuj: The confidence of the students and the eagerness to learn things was a touching
thing for me. As the school was Kannada medium and I used to take classes of 8th standard
on the first day when the teacher introduced me to the class, later on, I told the class that I
don't know Kannada after some time one of the students named Pawan stood up and said bro
it's ok we will manage he gave me support so that I can teach them, every student was
supportive. when I used to sit outside their class. They used to peek out of the window and
say come on, we will study NMMS because of their motivation and support. I covered half of
the syllabus. It was fun teaching them and I have learned many new things from them. I
learned a few words about Kannada. I know some teaching skills I learned how to manage a
large number of students. For me I never went to government school before this was my first
time I've heard that government school is not clean student don't obey their teacher, student
used to fight among themselves most of the thing I have seen in from movie about the
government school but after going there my whole perspective has changed the school I was
so neat and clean even the washrooms were clean. On my first day, I took classes of 8th, 7th
and 6th. In recession time, 7th and 6th class students used to come and ask sir why are you
not teaching us to come to our class? That was a very touching thing for me because the small
children want to learn so many new things. The headmaster and the teachers were
cooperative. As, teacher used to give us their lesson so that I could teach the children. In
lunchtime the headmaster used to call us inside the staff room and give us the mid-day meals
and used to love that on the last day when I told the children that it's my last day I will not be
coming from tomorrow they always so sad and they please to ask bro please come someday
to meet us or give us your contact number so that we can contact you.

2 VARUN: the co-ordination from teachers was over whelming and they warmly welcomed
me and my teammates by scheduling the classes according to our time slots and convenience.
I started my day by introducing myself to the class and build a conversation with them by
asking to introduce themselves. Speaking of awareness classes I tutored about active
citizenship and the responsibility of the students towards environmnt Second day was all
about providing them information about waste management by asking them to actively
participate in cleaning their own playground. Following day was all about educating them
about electricity management by switching off fans and lights while leaving classes and
computer labs as electricity is limited and renewable source of energy. In addition to this we
also thought about importance of tidy environment and educate the same to their fellow
friends and relatives. The warmth and innocence of the students is the highlight of my
personal experience. The co-ordination of teachers of this school is applaudable. The
attentiveness of the students is something I appreciate them about, because when something
is free and readily available people tend to not value it. But in this scenario my students made
most of it. The grasping power and friendly nature of students are top the notch and this is
what touched me the most. Most importantly It helped me to overcome my weak spot which I
was struggling myself for past few years i.e., stage fear. By educating them I also educated
myself that every problem has a solution and every weakness can be conquered. This is one
of the experiences that will be looked back on sometime in my life.
3 ARADHARSHINI : Working for youth for Seva (SIP) is a great learning
experience ,which I never taught I will go to place of teacher to teach a students from this
even I improved my leadership qualities by maintaining a team and students. My role was to
teach a 8th std students to crack their scholarship exam (NMMS). Backing up my basic
knowledge through teaching them made a sense. Although it is my first teaching experience
as a student for the students is really good. The stuff which gone right is, my communication
language to them and nothing went wrong. Buy attending the schools personally. Great
learning experience and also the good environment of those children. Better facilities to
students by convincing the school head and appoint a regular volunteer to look after this
issue. To improve our leadership quality. What problem touched me the most. The problem
that touched me the most is the children did not get proper medical treatment because of lack
of money. Conclusion this project helped us to learn about the behavioral aspects of students
lifestyle. We observed all the scenarios, did awareness programs, spent time with students,
did counseling sessions and we had many programs for the kids. We found the problems
faced by them and we suggested our solutions for them. Our solutions will help them in all
the aspects for their development. This project’s success was possible only through the
guidance given by the IFIM mentor Meera govindaraju ma’am

4 Hamza H: The entire experience of teaching in a government school was humbling to me.
It gave me a reality check on how blessed we actually are to be a part of the privileged class
of society. One particular experience. That stood out to me occurred while I was serving the
kids their midday meals. Although the food provided to the kids is simple and not a lot in
quantity, they seemed to thoroughly enjoy it and they finished their meals without being
fussy or complaining.

5 Avani Dubey: Working for the Social Immersion Program was one of the best decisions I
took in my life. Being a part of it and teaching students NMMS was interesting and full of
fun. So, what touched me the most? It would be very hard to answer that what touched me the
most, as there is not one specific thing that I would mention. There are a lot of things that
impressed me and because of which I enjoyed doing this social immersion program. To be
specific I would say I was enjoying working for the betterment of the students and teaching
them so that they can give their best in the examinations. Firstly, I would say what touched
me the most was their dedication towards study. I would not really say that all of them were
always excited to learn something new, but many of them used to be super excited about my
class and learning NMMS. Not only this but they used to enjoy learning and solving Maths
which always used to give me motivation to take the class everyday and teach them new
topics. I would also mention that I liked how they used to see a super hero in me and how
they always used to respect me. No matter how much I scolded them for not paying attention
or not solving the questions, they always respected me. They always did their homework and
that is why I felt they have a lot of dedication in them. The excitement they had in them about
learning and clearing the exams for the scholarship was very high. I got inspired by them too
about being so dedicated towards their goals. Not only the students but also the teachers of
the school were very cooperative and supporting. They used to offer us lunch and I liked how
friendly they were with all of us. I would say there are very little things that could make your
day and motivate you to perform your tasks and these were some of them. I enjoyed working
there and I hope to be a part of these activities more often.
6 Kartika: I was shocked to see the tough life behind this 8th grade cute boy. His father was
not there. His mother only takes care of everything. He is the youngest kid in his family. His
brothers were all drop their studies and go for the job because of the family situation. At this
background, he also need to support his family at this very young age. He used to gets up at
4:00 a.m. in the morning and went for the job of distributing the newspaper in his area. After
the job done, he goes to the school every day. After came to know the story of this kid, I was
in a responsible position to teach them. I’m so happy if this kid got scholarship so I’m taking
very serious about this NMMS scholarship exam. I strongly believe that this exam will even
change their lives.

One day, I was so touched because of the student teacher bonding in that school. One student
in my class was crying because of his favorite actor gets hospitalized. I didn’t know how to
handle the situation and I was just trying to console him. Class teacher came to know that he
was crying, suddenly that teacher meet him in personal and give some advice. After that,
every teacher in that school came to him and trying to consolidate him. That incident give me
the Goosebumps and came to know that their relationship was so strong.

Teachers were very supportive in handling students. When I was explaining some concepts
they didn’t understand because of my language barrier. At that time class teacher came and
teach them in their language and explaining the concepts very clearly. That helped the
students very well in understanding the concepts. I’m so happy to be a part of this SIP
program. I had a wonderful experience through teaching these kids and also gained a lot of
skill that would help me in the future.

7 Tamsil Anwar: Most of the times we take many things as granted in m any sphere of our
lives. I met a student from my class on my way back home on the bus. I gave students a copy
of NMMS study materials to make their own copy for studying at home. The student
approached me just started a casual conversation then he said his older brothers works to
support their family and he can’t do a photocopy because he cannot afford 50 rupees. I
promised him to get the copy from my own money. We blame everything around us but most
of the times we fail to see how privileged we are in terms of so many things and we become
ungrateful for everything we have. If I go back and again, I have to help someone in need,
then I would love to go back.

8 Akshat Verma: What I really was flattened by was the respect and I admired the
glitter in the eyes of the students which clearly exuberated their zeal to improve and
learn new things to prove themselves in the outerworld and in no way these kids are any
less then the kids in big private schools in terms of mental ability. A sense of acceptance
from school both from teacher and students, that I got had touched me the most.

9. Rakesh : First, I would like to say about main in charge on the school. she was behaving
rude with us. The warm and innocence of the students is the highlight of my personal
experience. The co-ordination of teachers at this school is applaud able. The attentiveness of
the students is something I appreciate them about, because when is free and readily available
people tend to not value it. And we got lot of experience though language, leadership skills.
By educating them me also learn so many new things. This is one of the great experiences in
my carrier.

10 Manvith : What touched me the most-how the students made me one of them so easily
and it made easier for me to teach them as-well

FINDING AND SUGGESTION

The collective findings of the whole Team members resonate with each other. We find us in
much more commonness than the differences.

The whole team discusses about the lack of proper studies in these schools especially their
students we were assigned.

A little language barrier is faced by all the group members in almost all the classes especially
by the students who don’t know Kannada.

A common lack of resources in the premises of the schools is acknowledged by the whole
team.

A common notion among all the team members were that 10 days were not enough for the
syllabus of the NMMS, and a much elaborate syllabus is requested.

Certain unique problems like schools not acknowledging the students even not cooperating
with them was also faced by few of the students, their argument was the NGO didn’t inform
or the schools don’t take the students seriously.

Although the students were really interested the team did faced problems with the number of
interested students, this may vary school to school at a varying degree, some team members
found it difficult to teach those students due to the lack of reasonable numbers of interested
students.

While it is noted that the students were not given much attention in those schools this may be
responsible for low numbers of interested students in the schools who find no interest in
going on with their studies.

Motivation is something almost every person struggles in some part of their life. Volunteers
in our team did find a lot of students who can do better but suffered from low motivation
probably due to multiple reasons. It may be certain reasons we cannot handle for example
could be due to low finances or less support from those hard-working families, this could
really impact those young minds.
Certain volunteers also faced less hygiene in those classrooms, not all the government
schools have the best of places this should be personal responsibility of the school, neither the
students nor the volunteers can do much other than teaching those students how to keep their
surroundings clean.

A lot of volunteers faced a common problem from the students that they want to teach
considerably slow, this could be mainly due to ignoring the calls of these students by those
who teach them.

A lack of technological resource is also faced at the workplace, when volunteers tried to
make copy of the questions of the NMMS syllabus to be distributed to the students not much
A4 sized papers were available for the students.

Due to low hygienic behaviour of the students the volunteers suggested that self-awareness
should be taught from primary schools so that they find it easy to tackle hygienic problems
both at home and at the schools.

Students really need a lot of basic knowledge in all the subjects especially STEM syllabus.
Even Mahatma Gandhi suggested that education should include technical way of learning like
using a charkha.

Volunteers should be encouraged to teach the basics of the subjects more often and should be
involved more at a personal basis to motivate those students to do better.

A lot of students even those students who were really interested did find it hard to grasp
NMMS syllabus mainly due to less understanding of the basics, if they did have the
knowledge of the basics, it would have been much productive days.

A common curiosity among the students was found and the students were really looking
forward towards us as their mentor.

Here are some of the findings and certain solution presented by individual students
respectively-

TEV ANALYSIS

Problem identification is one thing and solving that problem with solutions that are viable both
technologically and economically is a very tough task to execute. TEV analysis gives us a head start
as to how we can solve the problems in better way with the plans that are viable for us.

We have come up with a through TEV analysis which is aligned with the Sustainable Development
Goal of the United Nations. Our analysis also suggests some solutions that can be taken into
consideration by a country like India which has diversity in every nook and corner and of every type
be it cultural, lingual, societal, racial and any other way we can think of.

Solution (i)

According to various studies it has been proven that photographic memory or audio/visual
medium of studying helps children to retain more as compared to the traditional methods.
This will help us achieve ‘Quality Education”, the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal of UN.

Technological Viability:The technology required to achieve this goal are readily available
in the market and at a reasonable price due to increased competition in this space. Many
start-ups and companies like Tata offer services of smart classrooms which will help
students to learn by the medium of integrated digital devices like tabs, projectors,
assistive listening devices and other audio/visual components that make the lectures
more engaging and interactive for the kids.

Economic Viability: With these new start-ups coming up, it’s easier to get good technology
at

cheaper prices due to increased competition. And the first step towards this solution has already
been undertaken by Karnataka Government on 23rd June,2021 where they’ll distribute
tablets to 1.55 Lakh students. These kinds of digital solutions are abundantly available
through various mediums of NGOs, Government or CSR Activities of MNCs.

Solution (ii)
Technological Viability: Minimal technology is required to undertake this solution but
technology can be used for the better effectivity of this solution, which is pretty much
comprehendible from solution (i).

Economic Viability: There’s no big investment that is required to execute this task of
including Civic Awareness and other more relevant subjects in the curriculum as all you
need is to set-up a team of teachers who can design a course in such a way which can be
easily understood by students and also by employing teachers who can make these
subjects interesting and interactive, this will not only solve the problem in short term but
also tackle the root cause of this problem.

Solution (iii)

Technological Viability: This solution is technologically feasible as there are many

modern technologies that can help us identify, keep a track of, and provide better
affordability and availability of water and food to increase the standard of living of
the poor. These trackers will not only help us ensure proper supply of food and water
to the poor but also keep a check on the malpractices of middle-men and corrupt
officials as proper digital record of stocks would be there with the higher authorities
rather than in a physical format which can easily be forged.

Economic Viability: Every year India generates plenty of surplus which is either thrown away
or gets rotten up in public warehouses, which can be distributed abundantly to the under-
privileged class of the country and setting up automation and digitalized record for the
stocks of food grains and water supply will be a bit cost intensive but that can be recovered
with proper data of how much of the commodities is required in India and how much of it is
to be kept as a buffer and the leftover can be then further exported which will result in more
income to the country.

Solution (iv)

Technological Viability: Technologically viable with robotic and automated machines

available to efficiently and effectively maintain hygiene and sanitation in even the
remote places.
Economic Viability: Economically machines are not viable to a country like India which has
manpower in abundance and this can be solved by employing people of the under-privileged
section in sanitation works.
