negative Eugenics

Objectives: C. Appreciate the

importance of Eugenics to our
human race

FRANCIS GALTON
Sir Francis Galton first coined the term
“ eugenics ” in 1883. Put simply,
eugenics means “well-born.” Initially
Galton focused on positive eugenics,
encouraging healthy, capable people of
above-average intelligence to bear
more children, with the idea of
building an “improved” human race.

EUGENICS
• Eugenics is the selection of desired
heritable characteristics in order to
improve future generations, typically in
reference to humans.
• Eugenics refers to the use of procedures
like selective breeding and forced
sterilization in an attempt to improve the
genetic purity of the human race.
• EU- Good or well
• Genes- born (wellborn)
AIMS OF
EUGENICS
• To save resources
• To create healthy people/ healthy
community
• To have the community free from
mentally retarded people
• To decrease the human sufferings
TYPES OF EUGENICS
• POSITIVE EUGENICS
- is the form of eugenics, which
promotes marriage and breeding between
people considered “desirable”.
- Positive eugenics used education, tax
incentives, child birth stipends to encourage
procreation among fit people.

7
TYPES OF EUGENICS
• NEGATIVE EUGENICS
- sought to limit procreation through
marriage restriction, segregation, sexual
sterilization that which prevents those considered
less suitable from having offspring.
- the aim of negative eugenics is to reduce
the frequency of hereditary diseases and
disability in the community to as low as possible.

EARLY MARRIAGE OF THOSE HAVING
DESIRABLE TRAITS

It is the most commonly observed

fact that highly placed persons of
society often have great ambitions
for the future life.

SUBSIDING THE FIT
The selected young men and
women of best eugenic value
should be encouraged to
increase their birth rate

GENETIC ENGINEERING
By genetic engineering, it has
become possible to produce
various blood clotting factors,
complement proteins and other
substances for the correction of
genetic deficiency diseases.

SEXUAL SEPARATION OF THE
DEFECTIVE
The defective persons may have
various sex-linked diseases which may
be regulated by dominant or recessive
genes.

STERILIZATION
It is the best means to deprive an
individual from his power of
reproduction without interfering
with any of his normal
functions.

undesired traits should be
encouraged to have small
families through birth control.
