Bolts/screws in a differential
What kind of screw/bolt connections do
you recognize in the differential?

 Assembly
 Movement
 Sealing
 Adjustment
 Measurement

Load on the crownwheel bolts

 It seems like shear stress

 Due to tolerances only one bolt will carry
the load in beginning, unlikely!
 Torque conversion with friction
 Bolts should have a tensional load
 Safety in overload situation

Ing. A Boers
First exercise
Max engine torque: 3000 Nm
Working factor: 2,5
Ratio gearbox: 1:16
Ratio differential: 1:3
Friction coefficient crown wheel: 0,5
Pitch diameter bolts: 280 mm
Number of bolts: 16

Question: Necessary preload in the bolts?

Ing. A Boers
Answer first exercise

1. Is this force enough when the

wheel slip moment is 47000 Nm?
2. What will happen if the maximum
crown wheel torque has been
reached?

Example
A joint is dynamically and eccentrically loaded by the axial load FA = 8.500 N. A bolt of
strength grade 12.9 is to be assembled using a torque wrench.
A 10.000 N is the next largest load to FA in column 1 B Two steps for ”eccentric and
dynamic axial loading“ give FMmin = 25.000 N
C One step for ”tightening using a torque wrench“ gives FM max = 40.000 N D For FM max =
40.000 N, we find in column 2 (strength grade12.9): M 10

Homework / Assigment

 Suggest a bolt for the DAF differential
with the VDI standard
 Which parameters will influence the
stiffness of a bolt?
