• Ce = (masculine singular) this/that


• Cet = (masculine singular - when noun begins with a vowelor silent ‘h’)

• Cette = (feminine singular) this/that

USES

• The demonstrative adjective replaces the le/la/l’ and les when you want to point out a particular thing or
person
• Le garcon - ce garcon - this/that boy
• l’oiseau - cet oiseau - this/that bird
• La fille - cette fille -this/that girl
• Les élèves - ces élèves -these/those pupils

-CI/-LÀ

• When we must make it clearer which object you mean or distinguish between
this and that, these or those, we use –ci (this)and -là (that) joined to the noun by
a hyphen.
• -ci = these
• -là = those
-Est-ce que tu préfères ce pull-ci ou ce pull-là?
-Ces lettres-ci sont pour vous; ces lettres-là sont pour M. Brunet.
-Cette maison-ci est à louer, cette maison-là est à vendre.

NOTE THE FOLLOWING

• The noun must be followed by –ci or là to distinguish between this one and that
one.
• -ci and –là can also be translated as the former and the latter.
-Nous avons deux pulls dans cette taille, celui-ci est en laine(wool) et celui-là est
en acrylique(acrylic)
-Quel livre? Celui-ci? Non celui-là.
-Que penses-tu de ces souliers (shoes)? J’aime mieux ceux-ci que ceux-là.
PRACTICE QUESTIONS.

1. These cups are bigger than those ones.


2. Listen to those birds-that one is singing joyfully.
3. Look at the tourists –these ones are running and those ones are walking.
4. I saw Paul and Robert. The former was laughing and the latter was crying.

ADJECTIVES VS PRONOUNS

• Demonstrative adjectives can only be used with nouns.


• Demonstrative pronouns are only used instead of nouns.
• E.g 1. Je n’aime ps ces chapeaux-là, je préfère ceux-ci.
• I don’t like those hats, I prefer these ones.
• 2. Nous vendrons cette maison-ci et nous achèterons celle-là.
• We shall sell this house and buy that one.
NOTE THE FOLLOWING

the demonstrative pronoun


-must agree with the noun to which they refer.
-do not add –ci or là to a demonstrative pronoun which is followed by De or a
Relative pronoun( qui/que/dont)
a) Notre garage est plus grande que celui de notre voisin.
Our garage is bigger than that of our neighbor’s
b) Mes lettres sont courtes, celles de Marie sont longues. (those
of Mary)
c) Quel chemin prenez-vous? Celui qui traverse le bois.
d) Quelles voitures préfères-tu? Celles qui sont bleues.
CELA (ÇA)/CECI

• Means that and is a pronoun used to indicate something which is not clearly
named-
• It is used when there is noun.
-don’t do that ! Ne faites pas cela
-that hurts. Cela me fait mal
-that’s a good idea. Ça, c’est une bonne idée.
