The Legions Invade:

• In 43 CE, the Emperor Claudius ordered the Legions invade Britain and
make it Province of the Roman Empire.
• Merchants and traders has discovered that Britain was rich in gold, silver,
lead, tin ,corn , meat, hunting dogs, skins and wool.
• Prisoners could become slaves back in Rome and taxes could be collected
to help run the vast Roman Empire.
Rome was a vast, wealthy city with beautiful buildings, streets
and shops, theatre and entertainments, a good water supply and
a population as large as Birmingham today. why, then were the
Romans interested in Britain???????????????
Merchants and traders had
told them of the country but
they were suspicious of the
weather and Britain’s warlike
people.
They wanted to see the
country for themselves.
The first Invasion

• The first invasion came in


55BCE , led by Julius Caesar .
His small army defeated tribes
in the south east of Britain, but
it didn’t try to capture the
country . There were no more
attacks on Britain for nearly 100
years.
