What is a colon?
• The colon has a special and definite use : a colon introduces.
• The colon means that something is to follow, often a list.

They took an enormous amount of equipment on their expedition : tents, ground-sheets, sleeping
bags , stoves, saucepans, tinned food of all sorts, a graet number of clothes.
•

•Important Note:
• - Use a colon to introduce a list of items only when the clause before
the list as an independent clause.
• - Do not use a colon before a list that follows a verb or a preposition.

• I have books on many interesting subjects : Goegraphy , science, and nature.
• The health club has every facility : a pool, Jacuzzi , juice bar , and a steam.
• You may be required to bring many items: sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.

• I need to shop for : clothes , shoes and bags.

• The things you need to take on your trip are: warm clothes, thick socks and boots.

Important Note
• A colon should not precede a list unless it follows a complete
sentence .
• ‘The things you need to take on your trip are’ and
• ‘I need to shop for’ are not independent clauses.
• They cannot stand alone as sentences, and so a colon cannot
be positioned after them to introduce a list.

• Use a colon to join an independent clause to a word, phrase or clause with the idea that the
second element is to explain or illustrate the idea of the first clause.
• Examples:
• - I enjoy reading: novels by Kurt Vonnegut are among my favorites.
•
- Garlic is used in Italian cooking: It greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes. It also enhances the
flavor of eggplant.
• – He hired some assisstants : veterinary students and other people with training (details)
