The Used of Verb Phrase

(modal + verb)

• Verb phrase is one or two auxiliary verbs
followed by a main verb.

examples:
He is reading a magazine.
They have been studying English.

• auxiliary verbs is also called helping verb, for


examples: is, am, are, was, were, have, has, had,
been, can, may, must, etc.
• There are 3 varieties of verb phrase:

1. Verb phrase in tenses


2. Modal + Verb
3. Passive Voice
2. Modal + Verb
• CAN/COULD + VERB 1 :

• dapat, boleh, mungkin

We can understand it now (dapat)


You can see me tomorrow
She could be there (mungkin/past)
• COULD HAVE + VERB 3 :

• kemampuan /kemungkinan yang tak


terlaksana waktu lampau

We went to Yogyakarta yesterday. He


could have visited me (means, he didn’t
visit me)
• MAY/MIGHT + VERB 1 :

• boleh, mungkin, semoga

 You may start now (boleh)


We may be mistaken (mungkin)
 May God bless you (semoga)
He might be wrong ( mungkin/past)
• HAVE BEEN + VERB 1 :

• Kemungkinan lampau (past possibility)

 He was absent. He might have been


sick.
• MUST:

• Harus, Pasti

 Excuse me, I must be off now. ( harus)


 He has got an excellent mark on
English. He must study hard. (Pasti)
• MUST HAVE + VERB 3 :

• Kesimpulan waktu lampau (past


conclusion) = pasti sudah

 He got good Grade Point Average


(GPA). He must have studied hard.
• SHALL :

• Akan, harus/pasti, disetujuikah.

 I shall do it tomorrow. (akan)


 They shall be punished. (harus/pasti)
 Shall I open the window? (disetujuikah
bila?
• SHOULD+ VERB :

• Seharusnya, sekiranya, tentunya

 He should be here. (seharusnya)


 If you should see one, buy it for me.
(sekiranya)
 You should be grateful for that.
(tentunya)
• OUGHT TO :

• Seyogyanya, Sebaiknya/Seharusnya

 You ought to be more relax


 We ought to work efficiently
 The government ought to manage our
forest wisely.
• WOULD RATHER/WOULD SOONER+ VERB :

• lebih suka

 I would rather stay at home.


 She would sooner be alone.
• BE WILLING TO + VERB :

• Mau/bersedia

 She is willing to translate it into


English.
 They are willing to help me.
Writing exercise
write these sentenses into english by using modal verb

1. Kami dapat menemui dia kemarin di rumah sakit


2. Anda dapat menggunakan komputer saya.
3. Mungkin mereka di rumah sekarang.
4. Kita harus berdoa untuknya.
5. Mereka seyogyanya bermain lebih serius.
6. Kami bersedia membantu mereka.
7. Mereka pasti telah mengetahui hal tersebut.
8. Saya lebih suka tinggal di rumah.
