ETALS

Subtitle
The simplest form of substances. This means that whatever you do with an element, it
remains to be the same element.
There are already more than a hundred elements and are organized in a Periodic Table.
Some of them are naturally occurring and some were produced in a laboratory
Activity 1 Which can conduct electricity, metals or
nonmetals?

Objective

In this activity, you should be able to distinguish between metals and nonmetals based
on its electrical conductivity.

Science LM pp. 59-60

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY
Thermal conductivity (Watt/centimeter-Kelvin (W/cmK). describes the transport of energy – in the
form of heat – through a body of mass as the result of a temperature gradient

Table 2. Thermal conductivities of some elements

Element Symbol Thermal Conductivity* W/cmK

Copper Cu 4.01
Aluminum Al 2.37
Iron Fe 0.802
Selenium Se 0.0204
Sulfur S 0.00269
Phosphorus P 0.00235
Activity 2 Acidity of the oxides of metals and
nonmetals

Objective

In this activity, you should be able to distinguish between metals and

nonmetals based on the acidity of their oxides.
