RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE 3

The main material costs would only be a few weighing scales and some printer paper, so
that's why we decided to go with it. However, students may also handle this as all they need
to do is verify that the trash complies to the rules.

The aim for this project are for students to be responsible of their garbage in school.
Therefore, improving the health and safety of the students and Ateneo De Zamboanga
University’s environment.

Objectives:
1. Improve the hygiene of the school;
2. Make students pay attention to litter;
3. Students can increase their grades through work.

PROJECT
a) First we need to prepare the necessary budget plan for the project to be started. So
that the program would be announced to the school.

OUTLINE b) After this, the actual program will start. The program requires us to record the name
of the student, the date of the transaction, and the quantity of trash in kg the student
gives. Once the quantity of trash the student gives reahes 1 kilogram, they will
receive a letter, which can then be exhchanged for grades.
c) Only recyclable trash is accepted by the program. Once collected, it will be disposed
like any other recyclable trash.
d) As time passes, the trash to grade ratio will be adjusted according to the situation,
like supply and demand.
e) At this point, the program should keep going. To encourage students in disposing
their trash correctly.
f) For the budget, the overall cost of the program is minimal. And miscellaneous
necessities like plastic gloves, and trash bags, cost low enough that they can be
acquired through personal funds.
We believe that the project will not be affected by students who perform poorly in
school. They will not be able to get high grades using the Trash to Treasure method
5

PROJECT because they will be too lazy to do the work to get higher grades. Plus, the amount of
trash required to get a large score is extremely high. Common recyclable trash that
students produce would be paper, plastic, and maybe beverage cans. The heaviest of
OUTLINE these items, the beverage can, weighs 13 grams. They would need to collect 77 cans to
even reach 1 kilogram of trash. Assuming the average students buys 1-2 cans a day, it
would 1-2 months to collect the cans necessary to get a letter. It would be much more
efficient to study for grades, than to collect cans.

This project would actually benefit the hard working students more, since only students
who put effort will actually accomplish this task with enough gusto to claim multiple
times in a semester. Though it may seem like there would be no visible change due the
previously mentioned facts, an average student would still have more drive to get grades
than a poorly performing student, so they will still help the collection of garbage and
have the possibility of claiming once a semester.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

Before the program begins, we will publish an online survey asking students about their
trash-disposal practices.

Example questions:
• Do you sort your trash before disposing them?
• How do you deal with waste before you throw them?
• Do you pick up trash on the floor and dispose of them?
• Do you intend to throw trash that is on the floor, but you believe that is not worth the effort and
therefore do not throw the trash?

After the program is launched, we release another online survey. We will also ask whether the
program has helped them or not. The specifics of the questions can be ironed out soon before
the survey needs to be released.
