Introduction
Optical networking is a means of communication that uses signals
encoded onto light to transmit information among various nodes
of a telecommunications network. They operate from the limited
range of a local-area network (LAN) or over a wide-area network
(WAN), which can cross metropolitan and regional areas all the
way to national, international and transoceanic distances. It is a
form of optical communication that relies on optical amplifiers,
lasers or LEDs and wave division multiplexing (WDM) to transmit
large quantities of data, generally across fiber-optic cables.
Because it is capable of achieving extremely high bandwidth, it is
an enabling technology for today’s Internet and the
communication networks that transmit the vast majority of all
human and machine-to-machine information.

BSC
Why transmission in a network

Link the different network entities together. Ensure the BTS

transport of data streams from a source to a destination.
MSC

In the case of mobile networks, the purpose of the transmission is to connect the
different network elements:

 Connect BTS to BSC

 Connect BSC BSC to MSC
 Connect MSC to PSTN
 Link MSCs to each other
 Link other networking elements such as management systems, billing,
HLR, VLR .... VMS
Network : transmission / piping ?

 It's like a network of pipes for water distribution

 Subscribers need digital data streams

 The plumber calculates the different pipe diameters

 When the flows are larger, the pipes must be sufficiently sized to
pass the data, and predicted for future flow increases
Optical fiber network

Why a BTS is not connected directly to its associated BSC?

BSC

 Interference problem
 Distance problem
 Direct path

We are obliged to use an optical network to transport the data
