Mahaparinibbana
Sutta
• Mahaparinibbana Sutta is found in the Dgha
Nikaya of the Sutta Pitaka of the Tipitaka. The
word ‘Mahaparinibbana’ is made up of
Maha+pari+nibbana where Maha is great, Pari is
‘full’ or ‘complete’ and nibbana is
‘enlightenment’ or ‘awakening’
The seven principals of the welfare of the
state
• The ‘Satta rajaparihaniyadhamma’ are-
• 1. To hold public meeting frequently.
• 2. To resolve the matters and take all decisions
harmoniously.
• 3. To support and honour their traditional systems.
• 4. To honour and hold the views of the elders with esteem.
• 5. To respect the women folk & not to abduct or force them.
• 6. To honour & support the religious shrines and
• 7. To show respect and provide support to the Arhants.
Buddhas advice to Householders at
Pataligama
• The householder should refrain wrong deeds, otherwise –
• The wrongdoer fall in poverty. The news of his evil deeds
will be known everywhere. Wherever the wrong doer
goes,in whichever society, whether of nobles or Brahmins or
religious leaders, he has to go with guilty feelings. The
wrongdoer will be very anxious before death. The
wrongdoer will be born in some unhappy state and suffer.
• The right doer or the ‘Silasampanna’ will enjoy—
• The right doer with his uprightness becomes wealthy. His
good deeds spread like the fragrance. He can enter any
society of nobles, religious leaders or Brahmins, with his
head high and command respect. He would die peacefully.
He would be reborn in some happy state in the heaven.
SARIPUTTASIHANADO
• SARIPUTTASIHANADO: ‘Sihannada’ of Sariputta or
the ‘Lion roar of Sariputta’- At Nalanda, the
Buddha stayed at the Pavarika mango-grove. Ven.
Sariputta met the lord at the mango-grove and
with his divine power could see that “among all
the Buddhas –of the past, present and even the
future Buddha,the Gotama the Buddha is the best
and he so declared it loudly. This is the ‘Sinhanada’
of Sariputta or the ‘Lion roar of Sariputta’.
The Seven Principals Of The Welfare Of The
Sangha
For the Sangha to prosper the monks should remain united, in harmony and
meet frequently.
For the Sangha to prosper not to impose new rules difficult to follow & act
according to the rules already exiting.
For the Sangha to prosper honour the monks & respect the elders.
For the Sangha to prosper- the monks should not fall prey to the craving
and other evil things.
For the Sangha to prosper- the monks should respect the fellow disciples
and treat them with care and humanity.
For the Sangha to prosper- the monks should think positively and not to
allow the moral values to decline.
The Buddha also preached the bhikkhus the Sila, Samadhi and Panna and
proceeded from Rajagaha to Ambalatthika to Nalanda along with large
retinue of Bhikkhus.
Buddhas Advice To Ananda
“Atta dīpa viharatha attasaranā anaññasaranā,
Dhammadīpā dhammasaranā anaññasaranā”
All conditioned phenomena are subject to decay. Strive away with due diligence

1. King Ajātasattu of Magadha
2. The Licchavis of Vesālī
3. The Sakyans of Kapilavatthu
4. The Bulas of Allakappa
5.The Koḷiyans of Rāmagāma
6.The brahmin of Veṭhadīpa
7. The Mallas of Pāvā
8. The Mallas of Kusinārā
9. The Brahmin Doṇa (The Urn)
10. The Moriyas of Pippalivana (the embers)
