UNIT II

INTRODUCTION
• A Solar Collector – device –collecting Solar radiation
• Utilization of Solar Energy requires Solar Collectors
• Two Types (a) Flat Plate Type SC (b) Focusing Type SC
• Flat Type SC or Non-Concentrating Type(Collector Area = Absorber Area)
• Focusing Type or Concentrating Type (Collector much more time that of Absorber Area)
• Conc.Type – Higher Temperature than Non-Conc.Type
• Conc.Type used to generate medium Pr.Steam
• Conc.Type is Better than Non-Conc.Type
• For better Effn.Collector should be mounted to face the Sun
PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES OF THE CONVERSION
OF SOLAR RADIATION INTO HEAT
• Green House Effect
• Most of the energy we receive from the sun comes in the form of light,
a short wave radiation, not all of which is visible to the human eye.
• Material which absorbs become warm and stores the heat , conducts it
to surrounding materials or reradiates it to the other materials of lower
temperature. This reradiation is a long wave radiation.
• Fig.Shows how temperature on earth is affected by the “Green House
Effect”

2. Typical Air Collector or Solar Heaters
