Background of
Goal 6 of UN
SDG
• Our SDG : Clean water and
sanitation
• Target 6.1: By 2030, achieve
universal and equitable access to
safe and affordable drinking water
for all
• 6.1.1: Proportion of population
using safely managed drinking
water services
• Salient Issue:  2 Billion people in
the world do not have safely
managed drinking water.

1/28/23 01:48:53 PM
Background
Describe the issue in relation to the
chosen country:
In Cambodia, more than 3.4 million people do not have
access to safe drinking water.
Only 24% have access to safe drinking water
Poor access to adequate water and sanitation
disproportionately impacts Cambodia's rural people, which
account for around 77 percent of the country's population.
We know that only 24% of Cambodians have
access to clean drinking water

Cause

Critical • Lack of infrastructure to treat and purify water

Causes & • Other areas of development have been prioritized

Effects
Effect
• Dealing with excessive rain during the rainy season
• Unstable soils and attraction of
unwanted living creatures
Cause
• Lack of public dustbins in cities for waste
disposal
• Infrequent collection of waste from rural
areas

Critical Effect
Causes & • Contamination of the food chain
• Contaminated water for livestock farming
Effects and agriculture
Critical Causes & Effects
(Cause)

Lack of proper water sanitation technologies in rural areas.

(Effect)

Transmission of diseases and illnesses

Development of cancer and causing death

Boost access to safe water,
sanitation, and hygiene
• UNICEF and the government work together
• Solution started in 2010
• Clean contaminated water systems that
communities regularly use
• Reduces the chance of children facing health
Solution(1) problems
• Students are motivated and encouraged to
study in school
Solution(2)
Expanding water suppli
es
• Water.org laid the groundwork
in Cambodia in 2014
• Launched a program in 2015
• Provide more affordable
financing for water supply
• Expand piped connections to
more households
• More citizens have access to
safe water
• Helps to protect the health of
Explain one dilemma faced by the
government based on the existing solution
• Boosting access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene to all parts
of the country, including in rural areas;

           - may be costly in the long term,

•  For maintenance works to be carried out nationwide at rural
areas;
•  - will take a longer time because maintenance workers must
travel from one village to another.
Sustainable solution
• Issuing portable water filters to poor areas of the country
• The straw removes up to 99.9% of waterborne bacteria and parasites as small as 0.2 microns
• The straw is reusable between 250-330 days with an average use of 3-4 liters a day
• Low cost compared to typical water filtration system and very portable weighing at 46g
• Very convent due to It small dimension and
weight
• Very clean and sanitary as a carrying pouch
is provided
