1
Electromagnetic Environment (EME)

The electromagnetic environment (EME) of a UHV AC transmission project

mainly involves the power frequency electric field, power frequency magnetic
field, radio interference, and audible noise.

Electromagnetic Environment (EME) includes :

• Electromagnetic Interference
• Electromagnetic compatibility
• High Intensity Radiated Field
• Lightning Protection

2
Electromagnetic interference, EMI

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is unwanted noise or interference in an

electrical path or circuit caused by an outside source. It is also known as radio
frequency interference. EMI can cause electronics to operate poorly, malfunction or
stop working completely.

 EMI occurs because of the close relationship between electricity and

magnetism

How to prevent EMI : The best way to prevent EMI is to use good quality electronics
from reputable suppliers . Modern error correction and filters can also reduce the
effect of nearby EMI sources.

3
Types of Electromagnetic interference, EMI

EMI - Electromagnetic Interference can arise in many ways and from a number of
sources .

One way of categorizing the type of EMI is by the way it was created:

•Man-made EMI
•Naturally occurring EMI

Another method of categorizing the type of EMI is by its duration:

•Continuous interference
•Impulse noise

4
Types of Electromagnetic interference, EMI

It is also possible to categorize the different types of EMI by their

bandwidth.

• Narrowband : Only affects a specific radio frequency and is commonly

from a radio transmitter

• Broadband : Affects a large portion of the radio spectrum at many

frequencies and is commonly caused by malfunctioning equipment.

5
Electromagnetic Compatibility

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of different electronic

devices and components to work correctly even in the presence of other
devices that emit electromagnetic waves.

There are two main elements to EMC:

Emissions :   The EMI emissions refer to the generation of unwanted electromagnetic
energy. These need to be reduced below certain acceptable limits to ensure they do
not cause any disruption to other equipment.

Susceptibility & immunity :   The susceptibility of an item of electronics to EMI is the
way it reacts to unwanted electromagnetic energy. The aim of the design of the circuit
is to ensure a sufficiently high level of immunity to these unwanted signals

6
Electromagnetic Compatibility

A system is said to be electromagnetically compatible if:

• Does not cause interference with other.

• Does not susceptible to emission from other system.
• Does not cause interference with itself.
