SPATIAL PATTERN

and
SEGREGATION
WHAT IS SPATIAL PATTERN?
• It is an analytical tool used to measure the distance
between two or more physical locations or items.

WHAT IS SEGREGATION?
• It is the practice of separating people of different races,
classes, or ethnic groups.
THE CITY and
URBAN SPARWL
• Urban sprawl (also known as suburban sprawl or
urban encroachment) is defined as "the spreading of
urban developments on undeveloped land near a city."

• Urban sprawl has been described as the unrestricted

growth in many urban areas of housing, commercial
development, and roads over large expanses of land,
with little concern for urban planning.
HOW DOES URBAN SPRAWL AFFECT CITIES?
• Urban sprawl has significant environmental, economic and
social consequences. It leads to higher emissions from road
transport and loss of open space and environmental
amenities.

CHARACTERISTICS OF URBAN SPARWL

• Discontinuous
• Haphazard
• Uncoordinated
• Unplanned or poorly planned urban development.
TYPES OF URBAN SPAWRL
Infilling
• Urban infill is defined as
new development that is
sited on vacant or
undeveloped land within
an existing community, and
that is enclosed by other
types of development.
Edge-Expansion
• It refers to non-infill development
intersecting the urban footprint
and extending outward from
previous development

Outlying
• Outlying or leapfrog growth urban
growth taking place but detached
from the existing contiguous built-
up land extents.
• Urban sprawl is basically another word for urbanization. It refers to the
migration of a population from populated towns and cities to low density
residential development over more and more rural land.

CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF URBAN SPARWL

CAUSES
• Lower Land Rates EFFECTS
• Improved Infrastructure • Increase in Public Expenditure
• The Rise in Standard of Living • Increased Traffic
• Lack of Urban Planning • Health Issues
• Lack of Proper Laws that can Regulate • Sanitation Issues
Urban Planning
• Environmental Issues
• Lower House Tax Rates
• The Rise in Population Growth
• Consumer Preferences
OBSERVING SPATIAL PATTERN
• Spatial Pattern the study of people and their
environment.

• Spatial pattern can be characterized by the behavior

of the correlograms and amplitude within a specific
range of spatial orders.

• Defined by the arrangement of individual entities in

space and geographic relationships among them.
THREE SPATIAL PATTERN
• Absolute and relative

• Distance and direction

clustering

• Disperal and elevation

• A spatial pattern is a perceptual structure, placement, or
arrangement of objects on Earth. It also includes the space in
between those objects. Patterns may be recognized because
of their arrangement; maybe in a line or by a clustering of
points.

• For example, if a restaurant distribution map correlated that

one chain restaurant was placed every three blocks within a
city, then a uniform spatial pattern would be represented
through equidistant plotted points on the map.
