FLUID
MECHANICS
Why do objects float or sink? What
happens when a body is heated or
cooled? How do we regulate the transfer
of heat into and out of our bodies? Matter,
whether solid, liquid, or gas exhibits both
mechanical and thermal properties. The
fluid has the ability to flow and has the
property that allows objects to sink or float.
This discussion will mainly focus on the
other states of matter- liquid, gas, and
plasma- collectively called fluids.
The study of the properties of
fluids is called fluids mechanics.

Hydrostatics or fluid statics

deals with fluid at rest.

Hydrodynamics or fluid
dynamics deals with the fluid in
motion.
Therefore,
V = πr2h
= 3.14 (6.70cm)2 (25.2cm)
= 3552 cm3 or 3.552 x 10-3 m3

Using equation 10.1 and substituting values,

ρ=m
V

= 0.854 kg
3.552 x10-3 m3

= 240 kg/m3
PRESSURE
The pressure is a scalar quantity.

The SI unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa)

named after the French scientist Blaise
Pascal. One Pascal is equivalent to one
Newton/meter2. The atmosphere (atm) is
a commonly used unit of pressure and is
defined as the average air pressure at
sea level.
Other units of pressure equivalent
to 1 atm are given as follows:
HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE
