1. Theory of ESP
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a term that refers to teaching or studying English for a
particular career (like law, medicine) or for business in general.“ (International Teacher
Training Organization, 2005). There is a specific reason for which English is learned.
Pauline C. Robinson (1989) describes ESP as a type of ELT (English Language Teaching) and
defines it as: “Goal-oriented language learning.“ (Robinson, Pauline C., ed. Hywel Coleman,
1989, p 398) that means student has a specific goal that is going to be attained.
English for specific purposes (ESP) teaching conducted to equip learners with a certain English
proficiency level for a situation where the language is going to be used, termed target needs.
Since it provides instructional objectives, materials and methods developed on the basis of
learners’ needs and potential of interests, from the early 1960s, ESP has grown to become one
of the most prominent areas of English foreign language .

Answer : Speaking, listening, writing.

Answer : Yes, I have difficulty in accenting English because there are several foreign guests who come, such as Australia, 5.
India, and Malaysia. And some of these countries have different accents in speaking English, therefore we study English more.
5. How does the manager develop her English skills?
Answer : With them participating in training carried out by the Tourism Office for 3-4 months. And they learn individually too,
especially in speaking and vocabulary.
6. What is the reason that managers must master English?
Answer : To anticipate hotel employees if they cannot serve guests, therefore the manager must be able to master English in
order to handle all divisions in the hotel.
7. Is there a vocabulary expert to be found in your work that you speak frequently? If so , can you name
some of them as examples ?
Answer : Check in, Check out, Continental buffet, Housekeeping, Lounge area/ lobby, Indoor pool,
Bell captain, and other.
8. What type of English is often used by managers? Formal or informal English?
Answer : The type of English used by manager is formal.
9. When recruiting applicants for your job, is the ability to speak English a requirement that applicants
must have?
Answer : Yes, because we don't know when foreign guests will come so we have to prepare ourselves
before the guests come..
10. In learning English there are several skills, such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking. What is
most important to you as a manager?
Answer : The most important thing is speaking. Because by mastering speaking I can interact with all
guests, both local and foreign. By being able to interact well, guests will feel happy and appreciated. And
it will make a good experience for guests, so that next time guests can visit the hotel again.
11. What are the efforts to increase knowledge of English for hotel employees?
Answer : Efforts to improve our English skills have collaborated with the Tourism Office to participate in
training.

Name : ARMAN
He was born in 1988 on the island of Java. He graduated from Hospitality and Tourism. Previously he had worked
in Magelang and Yogyakarta as a restaurant staff. He worked again in Batam to be precise at the Golden View and
GGI Batam hotels for 5 years. After that, he worked again for Tiga Ras, precisely at the MyNasha hotel which was
established on June 15, 2018. From the hotel, there are only 3 rooms. So far, he has participated in 30 rooms in
developing the hotel. During his time as manager, he has handled foreign guests from Australia, India, Malaysia,
and Singapore.
4. Conclusion
After we interviewed tourism, especially hotel managers, by presenting 14 questions, we found that tourism really
needed English, especially in the hotel world. Because, one time they faced foreign guests, therefore every
employee, especially the manager, had to master English, especially speaking skills. When hotel managers recruit
employees, they must also master English. We also find that English for Specific Purposes that tourism need in
their work, including the following :
1. The use of speaking skills in serving guests
2. The use of listening skills in serving guests
3. Use of correct grammar and pronunciation in dealing with guests.
