Philosophical-Sociological and

Psychological Foundations of
Education
WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY?

Philosophy is a way of thinking about the

world, the universe, and society. It works by
asking very basic questions about the nature
of human thought, the nature of the universe,
and the connections between them. The ideas
in philosophy are often general and abstract.
PHILOSOPHY is a study that seeks to
understand the mysteries of
existence and reality. It tries to
discover the nature of truth and
knowledge and to find what is of
basic value and importance in life.
It also examines the relationships
between humanity and nature and
between the individual and society.
The word philosophy is a Greek world
“Philo “means love” and “Sophia means
wisdom” simply philosophy is Love of
Wisdom. But wait it’s not that simple.
What is wisdom? why love wisdom? , what
is sense? Then what is common sense, if a
human comes from monkey why still there
are monkeys around? Likewise there are
number of complicated questions from
various subject matters.
People who investigate for a
solution to such a complicated
question arise in their mind from
various subject matters are
called philosophers. In simpler a
philosopher can give solutions to
complicated questions in a possible
way. However, their answers can be
debated sometimes.
WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

Philosophy of education is about

as important to education as philosophy. ...
In fact, they often aren't as interesting, and
so, it becomes important to study the
original spirit of philosophy, and the original
spirit of a few of the greatest thinkers to
determine what is important for students in
the classroom.
WHY IS PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
IMPORTANT?

Behind every school and every teacher is a

set of related beliefs--a philosophy of
education--that influences what and how
students are taught. A philosophy of
education represents answers to questions
about the purpose of schooling, a teacher's
role, and what should be taught and by what
methods.
SCOPE AND FUNCTION OF PHILOSOPHY
OF EDUCATION
The scope of the philosophy of education
includes the critical evaluation of aims, ideas
and education, analysis of human nature,
educational values, the theory of knowledge
and the relationship of education and social
progress. It seems to perform three functions:
1) speculative, 2) normative, and 3) critical.
The speculative function of philosophy of
education consists in pursuing and enquiry,
forming theory about education, its causes and
nature. While doing so it tries to make a survey
of the whole field.

Normative functions are related to the

formation of goals, NORMS and standards.

The Critical function consists in scrutinizing

rigorously the terms and propositions involved
in educational thought and practice.
What is sociological education

The sociology of education refers to how

individuals' experiences shape the way
they interact with schooling. More
specifically, the sociology of education
examines the ways in which individuals'
experiences affect their educational
achievement and outcomes.

Educational psychology is the branch
of psychology concerned with the scientific
study of human learning. ... The field
