Potential form is used to describe : ① the possibility of an action
② the ability to do something

Person は Noun が ＋ Potential form

わたしは　にほんごを　はなします。 I speak Japanese.

↓
わたしは　にほんごが　はなせます。 I can speak Japanese.

＊ The particle を change to が

＊ In negative form, however, が is changed to は as follows,
わたしは　ひらがなが　かけます、でも　かんじは　かけません。 (negative)

わたしは　にほんごが　はなせます、でも　かんこくごは　はなせません。

わたしは　にほんりょうりが　すきです、でも　さしみは　たべられません

Noun が　できます
The potential form できます has also the meaning to be complete, to be read, or to come
into existence.

くるまの　しゅうりは　いつ　できますか。 when will the repair of the car

be ready?
くるまの　しゅうりは　らいしゅうできます。 The repair of the car will
be ready next week.
がっこうのとなりに　スーパーができました。 A supermarket has been
built next to the school.

Noun が みえます / きこえます

＊みえます means to be visible, to be able to see.
＊きこえます means to be audible, to be able to hear.

ここから　ふじさんが　みえます。　　　 Mt.Fuji can be seen from here.

となりのへやから　おんがくが　きこえます。 The music can be heard
From the next room.
Potential form

＊みられます
＊きけます

インターネットで　にほんの　えいがが　みられます。
I can watch japanese movies on internet.

ユーチューブで　はやりのおんがくが　きけます。
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　 I can listen to trendy music on YouTube.
よく　＋　どうし　 ( often, well, clearly )

よく　こうえんへ　いきます。 I go to the park often.

きょうは　ほしが　よく　みえます。 Today the stars can be seen clearly.

〜しか　＋　 negative (only)

わたしは　ひらがなしか　よめません。 I can read only hiragana.

わたしは　 1000 えんしか　もっていません。 I have only 1000 yen
