The Sun, The Earth and the Moon

• The Earth and the

Moon are constantly
moving in space.
• They make the same
movements all the time.
• The Moon moves
around the Earth and
the earth moves around
the Sun.
Orbit
• The Earth moves
around the Sun is orbit.

• It takes one year to

complete one round or
an orbit.
Rotate
• The Earth spins on it’s
axis from west to east.
This is called rotate.

• Earth completes one

rotation every 24 hours
or a day.
Axis
• The Earth is tilted on it’s
axis.

• The Earth spins all the

time on its axis every
24 hours.
Day and Night
• Earth’s rotation causes
Day and Night.
Questions

The Earth’s …………………………on its axis causes

everywhere on the Earth’s surface to
experience……………………..and ……………………..over a
period of 24 hours.
• The Earth’s rotation on its axis causes
everywhere on the Earth’s surface to
experience day and night over a period
of 24 hours.
• Copy the diagram and shade the half of the
Earth having night black and the half having
day yellow.
You are going to explain the idea of
night and day to a younger learner.
Plan how you could explain this using
things that you could find at home.
• Learners could suggest things they have at
home to use as the ‘Earth’ such as a ball, or an
orange or grapefruit with a stick through for
the axis. They could use a torch or a lamp for
the ‘Sun’.
• Challenge
The Earth rotates from West to East. So places
further East are ahead in time. If we wants to
telephone Brad, who lives West of him and
therefore is behind in time, he must phone in
the evening so that it is morning in Canada. If he
phoned in the morning it will be the middle of
the night in Canada and Brad will be asleep.

the horizon. We call this
sunrise.
• The Sun appears to rise in the east and set in
the west.
• Earth’s rotation causes sunrise and sunset.

• Sunrise and sunset times and the length of day

change every day through the year.
Solar System
• The universe is the whole of space. It contains
billions of stars in huge groups.
• Each groups is called galaxy.
• Our solar system is a tiny part of one of these
galaxies called the Milky Way.

galaxy. This cluster contains
hundreds of thousands of stars,
each one as big as or bigger than
our Sun.
Telescope

• We use optical
telescope to look at the
stars.
• This makes distant
objects like stars look
bigger and brighter.
• Mirrors inside the
telescope collect and
focus the light to make
