DISASTER
Disaster - definition

• Serious disruption of the functioning of the society


• Widespread human, material, or environmental losses
• Exceed the ability of the affected society to cope using its
own resources

In simple words
A disaster occurs when a hazard (natural or manmade) strikes a vulnerable society

AIM of Emergency preparedness plan

• Provide prompt care and assist the national emergency policy to prompt


effective medical care to the maximum possible, to minimize morbidity
and mortality
• Wellkins medical centre uses Colour codes to denote to staff on various
emergency situations. The use of code is indented to convey essential
information quickly and with a minimum of misunderstanding to
appropriate staff, while minimizing stress and preventing panic among
patients and visitors of the medical centre.

Scope
• Wellkins Medical Center has a CPR team constituting physician,
pediatrician, Nurses and other supportive staff. 

• Dial #456 from any phone can connect to the reception and ask the
reception staff to activate public address system for announcing the event. 

• CPR alert is announced as CODE BLUE <with clear identification of


the location including the floor> three times.

1st line Medicines

• 1. ADRENALINE
1ml ampoule (1:1000=1mg/ml) ETT/IV push 
• Adult dose: 1mg=1ml/dose Repeat x 3-Q5 minutes 
• Pediatric dose:1 st dose 0.01mg/kg (0.01ml/kg) 
• 2 nd dose 0.1mg/kg (0.1ml/kg) Repeat x 3 – Q5minute 
• Max-1mg(1ml)/dose
• May use diluted in sterile water for small children
1st line Medicines

• 2. ATROPINE –
1ml ampoule (0.6mg/1ml) IV push 
• Adult dose:1mg=1.6ml/dose (may give 2ampoules) Repeat as needed 
• Pediatric dose: 0.02mg/kg/dose = 0.03ml/kg/dose 
• Max. - 1mg/dose = 1.6ml/dose 
1st line Medicines

• 3.AMIODARONE 
• 4. VASOPRESSIN 
• 5. XYLOCAINE 2%
• 6. MgSO4 .50% 
1st line Medicines

3ml ampoule (50mg/1ml) IV push 


• Adult dose: 300mg 1st dose IV bolus = 6ml , 150mgs 2nd dose IV = 3ml 
• Pediatric dose: 5mg/kg/dose IV (0.1ml/kg) bolus 
• Max. – 300mg/dose = 6ml 
• May Repeat x 1

• Physician on duty 
• Pediatrician if it is an infant or child 
• Code blue duty nurses and other 4 Members. 
• Patient’s own physician if available.

• Disaster Management Team has the responsibility of making decisions and


coordinating all activities during the disaster.

General Guidelines 
• The manager on duty is responsible to solve issue if it is service related. 
• They try to resolve the issue and bring an amicable solution acceptable
to both parties. 
• If do not resolve with the involvement of the team members, the MOD
shall escalate the issue to the nearby police 
• Avoid overcrowding at the location.
