Form 4.5
Plan and Design lab format
 Date:3rd May 2021
 Lab #:
 Observation: Harry notices his dad wrapping an avocado in newspaper and placing it
on the kitchen counter, he asked his Dad “why are you doing this”. His dad replied
that the avocado will ripe faster this way as oppose to just leaving it with out
wrapping
 Hypothesis: Avocado will ripe faster wrapped in newspaper rather than not being
wrapped.
 Aim: to determine if avocado will ripe faster wrapped in newspaper as oppose to not
being wrapped
 Apparatus and Materials: 2 avocadoes (same age), a sheet of newspaper, kitchen
knife
 Method: 1) get two avocadoes of same age from the same tree
2) Wrap one avocado in a sheet of newspaper.
3) Leave the second unwrapped.
Plan and Design lab format
4) Place both avocado on the kitchen counter for 3 days(72 hours).
5) After three days unwrap the avocado from the sheet of newspaper and label
wrapped avocado cut with the kitchen knife.
6) Repeat step 5 with the second avocado but label unwrapped
7) Compare both avocadoes by colour/appearance, texture and taste.

 Variables: Manipulated ( the thing that changed): conditions: wrapped vs.

unwrapped
Responding( what was measured, what the manipulated affect): how fast the
avocado ripped
Controlled (the things that remained the same): age of avocado

 Data capture: Table showing observations obtained from the wrapped and
unwrapped avocado

DO NOT FILL IN ANY RESULTS IN THE TABLE BECAUSE THE LAB WAS NOT
CONDTED, IT WAS ONLY PLANNED AND DESIGNED
Plan and Design lab format
 Precautions: Ensure that avocado was wrapped properly
 Sources of errors: the use of two avocadoes of different age
 Assumptions: using two avocado from different trees will not affect results

CHOOSE ANY ONE OF THE ABOVE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO INCLUDE ALL THREE
IN YOUR LAB
Plan and Design lab format
 Expected Results: the avocado that was wrapped will ripe faster than the
unwrapped one
 Conclusion: the expected results was in favour of the hypothesis and thus the
hypothesis was accepted.
Practice Plan and design- Choose any one of
the following
Choose any one of the following and follow the previous format and do a
complete write up of a plan and design lab. You will need to formulate your
own observation

 Bread dough will rise faster on a hot day than a warm day
 Cut seeds will germinate faster than uncut seeds
 Acetone will remove nail polish but water will not
