Title: Oxidation

Observation: Mr. James notices his dad wrapping a pear in newspaper and placing it on the kitchen
counter. He asked his dad, “Why are you doing that?”. His dad replied, “That the pear will ripe faster this
way as opposed to just leaving it without wrapping.”.

Hypothesis: pear will rise faster when wrapped in newspaper rather than being wrapped in transparent
wrapping.

Aim: to determine if a green pear will rise faster when wrapped in newspaper.

Materials: 3 green pears with stems attached 1 sheet of newspaper, 1 sheet of plastic wrap, 1 large
container for holding.

Method:

1. Obtain 3 green pears from the same tree. Ensure they are similar in size.
2. Wrap one pear in a sheet of news and another with plastic wrap.
3. Leave one pear unwrapped.
4. Place the 3 pears in a large container. Leave the container opened.
5. After 3 days unwrap the pear from the sheet of newspaper.
6. Repeat step 5 with the plastic wrap.
7. After unwrapping the pears, pluck the stem from each and note which stem required little effort
to remove. Also, note the color and texture (feel) of each pear.
