INTRODUCTION
• The railway systems in India and other countries are the most widely used and effective and one of the least
expensive modes of transportation.

• Indian railways are the fourth largest network in the world, it has route length of 67,956Km.

• Over thousands of railways running on track every day. As we know that it is surely impossible to stop, the
running train at instant is some critical situation or emergency arises.

• Road accidents at railway gate is a leading cause of death and injury worldwide.

• Surveys conducted by Indian Railway found that about 17% of total railway accidents in India is crossing
accidents of which majority occurs at passive railway crossings.

OVERVIEW WITH PROBLEM STATEMENT
• This project explicitly deals with one of the most
common problem that is traffic jams besides a railways
crossing. Since gates of Railway crossing are usually
manually operated, for most of the times, gates are kept
closed for no reason increasing road traffic. Moreover
in our country accidents at rail road crossing are
increasing day by day and train accidents cause severe
damage to life and property. To solve the above
problem, we have come with an idea that would
automatically control the railway gates at junction.

Project Objective and Scope
Existing System
• Completely manual operated.

• Once the train leaves the station, the stationmaster informs the gatekeeper about the arrival of the train
through the telephone.

• Once the gatekeeper receives the information, he closes the gate depending on the timing at which the
train arrives.

• Hence, if the train is late due to certain reasons, then gate remain closed for a long time causing traffic
near the gates.

• Lack of proper communication to the gatekeeper about train arrival will lead to accidents and loss of
property.

PROPOSED SYSTEM
• The arrival of the train is detected by the IR and sends information to the gate motor driver for opening
and closing the gate.

• The first sensor is fixed at a certain distance from the gate and the second sensor is fixed at the same
certain distance after the gate.

• The gate is closed, when the train crosses the first sensor and the gate is opened, when the train crosses
the second sensor.

• This system deals about one of the efficient methods to avoid train accidents.

• Another part is based on software programming to operate the hardware structure. Program for railway
gate control system is based on Arduino with Embedded C language.
