SPACE DISCOVERY
CONTENT

• 3-5 Natural disaster

• 6-8 Medical Discovery
• 9-11 Space discovery
NATURAL
DISASTERS
- Warning systems
- Technologies can help alarm citizens, in sufficient
time before a disaster will hit, so that they can
evacuate the area, or make the necessary survival
preparations
- Maps helping citizens and responders navigate area safely
- Real time maps, that can be pdated with the use of
drones, can help responders in reaching areas more
efficiently and faster
- The NASA FINDER, developed in response to the 2015
Nepal earthquake
- 8,669 deaths and injured an additional 17,866
people
- The suitcase-sized device allowed for search and
rescue teams to scan debris for survivors by
detecting human heartbeats and respiration under
solid concrete and rubble
NATURAL
DISASTERS
Recovery efforts:

• Re-establish communication and

electricity supply
• Provide medical assistance for
injured
• Find individuals
• Distribute essentials: food, water,
and sanitation.
ADVANTAGES
• More efficient ways of finding victims of natural disasters
• Communication with victims on site
• More efficient navigation and restoration of environments

DISADVANTAGES
• Its effectiveness depends on everyone still having usable electronic
devices
• Depends on the country having the infrastructure to accommodate the
technologies
MEDICAL
DISCOVERIES
•  REMOTE PATIENT MONITORING
• RPM allows doctors to monitor their patients
without being in the same room as them. These
include: blood pressure, sugar levels and heart beat
• Removes the need for patients to travel to doctor’s
offices and vice versa
• ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
• AI can be used to evaluate large amounts of patient
data that they can base an algorithm on, that they
will then make decisions based on and learn from
MEDICAL
DISCOVERIES
• NEW METHODS OF DRUG DEVELOPMENT
• Technology can be used when developing medicines,
cures and vaccines, in order to speed up the process of
formulating these drugs. We saw these types of
technologies help us during the Covid 19 Pandemic
•  NANOMEDICINE
• Nanotechnology operates on molecular and atomic scales
• Nanomedicine applies nanotechnology
•  CytImmune Sciences, a leader in cancer nanomedicine,
has recently completed a Phase I trial of using gold
nanoparticles to target drug delivery to tumors
• BlueWillow Biologics, a biopharmaceutical company, has
developed nanotech that fights viruses and bacteria.
ADVANTAGES
• More efficient ways of treating patients
• More efficient remote communication
• Faster analysis of diseases and faster finding of cures

DISADVANTAGES
• Possibly expensive
• Might not be as efficient as human work yet
• Side effects of medicine may be noticeable by humans but not machines
SPACE
DISCOVERIES
• Small Satellites
• Small satellites are useful as they can be mass
produced and distributed. They are suitable for
wirelesss functions and GPS tracking
• Advanced Space Manufacturing
• Space structures, space shuttles and satellite
sensors all help facilitate space discoveries
• Momentus, a US startup, makes reusable rockets
that make transportation to space affordable
• Space Traffic Management
• Debris is starting to overflow our orbit.
Technology is needed to help astronauts and
satellites navigate through it
• ClearSpace is a small satellite that removes
debris
SPACE
DISCOVERIES
• Smart Propulsion
• These technologies aim to reduce the
environmental effects of rocket launches
• Space Activity Management
• Facilitates the movement and activity in
space
• Leviathan Space Industries built a
network of 14 space stations and creates
an artificial gravity in order to facilitate
trade and tourism
• Space Missions
• Space missions are constantly improving
and technologies are becoming more and
more efficient
• Lunar Station Corporation compiles data
from lunar datasets in order to create a
3D model of moon conditions
ADVANTAGES
• Travelling to space could soon be affordable
• More efficient communication because of satellites
• Possibility of greener space travel

DISADVANTAGES
• Costly
• Space missions are still only for professionals

WHAT DID WE LEARN?

• Technology is a useful tool, helping us navigate and mitigate the problems that arise with natural
disasters, leading the way in medical discovery, and helping us find new spots in our universe

• The condition is that there is enough money available to implement these solutions and that, when
necessary, everyone has access to these technologies
