Introduction

• In our daily lives, it is common to see dust accumulated in places that

are untouched even for just a few days. As this, most of us will consider
dust to be dirty.
• But due to remarkable technological development, a dust that is
smarter has emerged and it will change our perception of dust. Let’s take
a look at this ‘smart dust’.

3
This is what Smart Dust Look like.
A sensor that is much smaller than a penny.
The concept of Smart Dust was developed by Kristofer Pister in
1997.

4
What is Smart Dust?

• Smart Dust devices are small wireless microelectromechanical

sensors (MEMS) that can detect everything from light to vibrations.

•This new technology combines sensing, computing, wireless

communication capabilities and autonomous power supply within
the volume of only a few millimeters.

• It is very hard to detect the presence of the Smart Dust and it is

even harder to get rid of them once deployed.

6
SENSOR

•It integrates various sensors such as light, temperature, vibration,

magnetic fields, wind shear onto the mote.

• Recent advances in technology have put many of these sensor

processes on exponentially decreasing size/power/cost curves, and
the results of this technology are of direct use here.

•The sensors could be classified into two groups

(1) WEATHER MONITOR
(2) MOTION DETECTORS.

7
PASSIVE REFLECTOR

•It consists of three orthogonal mirrors. Light enters

bouncing each of the three mirrors and reflect back
parallel to the direction it entered.

•One mirror is mounted on spring so the light

entering does not return the same entry path.

8
ACTIVE-STEERED LASER SYSTEM
For mote-to-mote communication an active steered laser
communication system use an onboard light source to send a light
beam towards its receiver

SOLAR CELLS

Solar cell is one of the most abundant source of energy natural

choice for power they are compact an generating multiple potential,
compatible with our other processes.

9
POWER
Batteries can store about 1J(joule) of energy per cubic
millimeter. And could be backed up with a solar cell or vibration
energy sources.

IMAGE RECEIVER

The Image receiver in smart dust is used to detect images as in our

eyes or camera.

Image receivers utilize this to analyze the different portion of the

images separately to process simultaneous transmission from
different angles. 10

harsh weather.

12
•Virtual Keyboard -
Glue a dust mote on each of your fingernails. Accelerometers will sense
the orientation and motion of each of your fingertips, and talk to the
computer in your watch.

•Product Quality monitoring

13
Advantages

• Environmental science: Using motes, scientists learn more about

soil contaminants, water flow, the reasons why volcanoes erupt.

• Urban Areas: A system of motes can be placed within a city to

determine the congestion of traffic areas or to indicate the location
of an accident.

• In the military, they can perform as a remote sensor chip to track

enemy movements, detect poisonous gas or radioactivity.

14
Disadvantages

• It is difficult to fit all these devices in a small Smart Dust

both size wise and Energy wise.

•Privacy Issue

•Another concern is the security of the information

transmitted through this sensors.

15
Conclusion

▰As smart dust is dispersed, it will likely help in the

prevention of crime and detection of the potential for natural
disasters. There is no doubt that smart dust will be used to
monitor various environments and make our lives better.
▰Of course, there is always the potential for this technology
to be abused and used to expose harmful information. I look
forward to smart dust being further developed and being able
to use the technology.
