Plant and Animal Tissue

Objectives:
Classify tissues basically as animal or plant
tissues

Tell how tissues function as part of the

multicellular organisms
What are tissues?
TISSUES are the collection of
cells that have similar structure
and function together as a unit.

Plant Tissue

Meristematic Tissue
• growth tissue that serves in
the production of new cells
by the process of mitosis.

NOTE: Meristematic cells are

all living cells.
Meristematic Tissue
Apical meristem
is responsible for the
increase in the length
of roots and shoots
and for leaf
production.
Meristematic Tissue

Lateral meristem
involves vascular and
cork cambium
responsible for the
increase in diameter of
the shoot.
Meristematic Tissue

Intercalary meristem is
responsible for the increase
in length in the middle
position.
Plant Tissue

Permanent Tissues
• Tissues that are
completely grown and
have lost the ability of
division.
Permanent Tissue

Vascular tissues
transport or conduct
food and water to
supply the plant’s
nutrition.
Permanent Tissue

Xylem tissue is composed of

elongated, liquefied tubes called vessels
and tracheids which conduct water and
mineral salts from the roots to the
leaves.
Permanent Tissue

Phloem consists mainly of

unliquefied living cells called sieve
tubes, which convey food materials
from the leaves to other parts of the
plants.
Plant Tissue

Surface or Dermal
Tissues
• Cover and mainly
protect the plant
Surface or Dermal Tissues

Epidermal tissue is
located on the surface of
roots, stems, and leaves.
Surface or Dermal Tissues

The periderm is a
waterproof tissue that
becomes the bark and cork
of an old tree.
Plant Tissue

Ground or Fundamental
Tissues
• Help support as well
as protect the plants
Ground or Fundamental Tissue

Parenchyma tissue help in

maintain the shape and
firmness of the plants. It also
serve as storage of food and
water.
Ground or Fundamental Tissue

Collenchyma is considered as
mechanical tissue that provides
support to immature parts of young
plants particularly to the stem of non-
woody older plants and leaves.
Ground or Fundamental Tissue

Sclerenchyma tissue is considered

functional upon maturity and is made
up of dead cells.

Ex. Sclereids which are present in

seedcoat and fibers.
Animal Tissue
Epithelial tissues form the covering of all body surfaces, line body
cavities and hollow organs, and are the major tissue in glands.
Animal Tissue

Connective and
supportive tissue is the
tissue that connects,
separates and supports all
other types of tissues in
the body.
Connective and Supportive Tissue

Fibrous Tissue provides support and

shock absorption to our bones and organs.

Cartilage Tissue is made up of

cartilage cells that secrete fibrous material
which are strong but flexible.
Connective and Supportive Tissue

Bone Tissue support and

protect the soft tissues, calcium,
and phosphate storage and
harboring of bone narrow.
Connective and Supportive Tissue

Adipose Tissue serves as

fat storage and as supporting
pads for other tissues.

Vascular Tissue is the

blood transporting and
circulating materials in our
body.
Animal Tissue

Muscular Tissues
• Give form and shape to the
body and help bones to
move the body
Muscular Tissues

Skeletal muscles or striated

muscles are attached to the bones
by bundles of collagen fibers
known as tendons and it works
voluntarily.
Muscular Tissues

Cardiac muscle works to

keep your heart pumping
through involuntary
movements.
Muscular Tissues

Smooth muscle is
responsible for
involuntary movements
in the internal organs.
Animal Tissue

Nervous Tissues
• responsible for
coordinating and
controlling many
body activities.
