INTRODUCTION
National Research Institute For Chemical Technology (NARICT),
 Established in 1988.
 Located at km 4 old Kano road, Basawa road, Zaria, Kaduna state.
 It is responsible for providing new research and development in the processing and
conversion of indigenous raw materials into valuable chemical products for
industrial application in the country.
3
EXPERIENCE ACQUIRED
The following are some my experience acquired during the course of six month industrial training at NARICT:
 Extraction Of Oil From Seed
 Production of composites from polymer and natural plant fibres.
 Extraction of essential oil from aromatic plants (Eucalyptus and lemon grass).
 Catalyst synthesis e.g. MgO and CaO.
 Management skills.
LINKAGE OF EXPERIENCE TO THEORY
 Chemical Reaction Engineering (CHEN305 & CHEN407)-Material balance
 Material Science and Engineering (CHEN306)-Strength of materials
 Unit Operation (CHEN302, CHEN401 & CHEN403)-Leaching and solvent extraction
 Management (CHEN202)

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The over reliance on the usage of concrete produced from cement (binder) for building
have kept their cost high. The need for investigating alternative sources to replace
conventional cement becomes necessary rather than dumping it in fields.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Aim:

The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of using locust bean pod ash and
extract for the production of clay bricks for building.

Objectives:
 Extraction of active ingredient in the locust bean pod
 Ashing of locust bean pod in open air
 production of clay bricks using locust bean pod waste extract
 Production of clay bricks using locust bean pod ash by replacing some percentage of cement
with the ash
 Characterization of compressive strength test on bricks produced from locust beans pod extract
and ash.
9
JUSTIFICATION

Due to the fact that locust bean pod are abundant and easily available, it will lead

to:
 Easy availability and affordability of material for building as well as reducing case of unavailability of home
(homelessness).
 Reduction in environmental pollution
 Reduction in construction cost
 Generation of job opportunity for rural dwellers.
 Conversion of waste to wealth

SCOPE

The scope of this research work is limited to:

strength of clay bricks

 Studying effect of different replacement of locust bean pod ash with cement

on the compressive strength of clay bricks produced from the mixture

CONCLUSION

Locust bean pod can substantially be used as a substitute for cement in

construction as the result shows an increase in strength from 2.5MPa to
5.6MPa with increase in concentration of extract from 0.07kg/l to 0.3kg/l and
a decrease in strength with an increase in percentage replacement of the locust
bean pod ash.
