Parts of a Strain Gage
What is Strain Gage?
• A strain gage is basically a resistance wire which is firmly
cemented to a surface of a strong object with then receives a
force.

• When force is applied to the object, it distorts very slightly.

• The object either stretches slightly or compresses slightly,

depending on whether it feels a tension or a compression force.
What is Strain?
• The change in the length of the strong object per
unit of its original length.
Hooke’s Law

• F = force applied to the object (in the direction of distortion)

• A = cross-sectional area of the object
• Y = Young’s Modulus
Resistance of the Wire

• R = resistance of the wire in ohms

• ρ = resistivity of the wire material
• L = length of the wire
• A = cross-sectional area of the wire

•L = Increase • L = Decrease
•A = Decrease • A = Increase
