Engineering Problem:
How to minimize the cost of making a hot water tank with the given
capacity of the tank is 0.15m³?
To minimize the cost, we need to find radius and height of the tank
that minimizes the surface area.
When the surface area is minimized, less metal will be used to make
the hot water tank.
Therefore, the lesser cost needed.
The tank is a combination of
semisphere and cylinder, Hot water tank:

1. Find equation for h
Volume of hot water tank (V = h + );
0.15 =h +
h = 0.15
h =-
h = -
2. Find formula of surface area in terms of r
Surface area of hot water tank (A(x) = h + 3);
A(h) = h + 3
A-= +3
= +3
= +
From the equation that we obtained,
we can estimate the minimum value of
r and h that minimize the surface area
of the tank.
1. Derive the equation of the surface area
A-= +

A’ - = -0.3 +

2. Set the derivative equation = 0, then solve r

+ = (0)
-0.3 + = 0
