Engineering Problem:
How to minimize the cost of making a hot water tank with the given
capacity of the tank is 0.15m³?

 To minimize the cost, we need to find radius and height of the tank
that minimizes the surface area.
 When the surface area is minimized, less metal will be used to make
the hot water tank.
 Therefore, the lesser cost needed.
The tank is a combination of
semisphere and cylinder, Hot water tank:

1. Find equation for h
Volume of hot water tank (V = h + );

0.15 =h +

h = 0.15

h =-

h = -
2. Find formula of surface area in terms of r
Surface area of hot water tank (A(x) = h + 3);

A(h) = h + 3

A-= +3

= +3

= +
From the equation that we obtained,
we can estimate the minimum value of
r and h that minimize the surface area
of the tank.
1. Derive the equation of the surface area
A-= +

2. Set the derivative equation = 0, then solve r

+ = (0)

-0.3 + = 0
