Chlorophyllic

Plants
F.H.
Why are some plants green?

• Plants look green because of a

natural pigment called chlorophyll,
which absorbs the red, blue, and
other wavelengths of light, and it
reflects the green back to your eyes,
so that is what you see

Does chlorophyll have any other uses in plants, besides
making them appear green?

• Definitely! Chlorophyll and light

energy are both important for
plants in another way, too. Plants
trap light energy from the
sun. Photosynthesis happens when
they combine this light energy with
carbon dioxide from the air as well
as water and turn these into sugars
that act as food for the plant.
Chlorophyll traps the light from the
sun to be used for photosynthesis,
so without chlorophyll, plants could
not survive!

What is Photosynthesis?
• The word photosynthesis can be
separated to make two smaller words:
o “photo” which means light
o “synthesis” which means putting together
• Plants need food but they do not
have to wait on people or animals to
provide for them. Most plants are
able to make their own food
whenever they need it. This is done
using light and the process is called
photosynthesis.
• Photosynthesis is the process by
which plants make their own food,
and oxygen.

What is needed for Photosynthesis?
• To make food, plants need not just
one but all of the following:
o carbon dioxide
o water
o sunlight
• Carbon dioxide from the air passes
through small pores (holes) in the
leaves. These pores are called
stomata.
• Water is absorbed by the roots and
passes through vessels in the stem
on its way to the leaves.
• Sunlight is absorbed by a green
chemical in the leaves.

Role of chlorophyl in Photosynthesis
• The light dependent reactions of
photosynthesis take place in the
chloroplasts, where light is
absorbed by the chlorophyll and
oxygen is produced.
