TYPES OF SPEECH

We speak with a goal in mind. This goal vary based


on the context of the communication situation or the
people involved. The purpose why we speak either
to one person or to a big audience may either be to
disseminate information, to entertain people, to
express our emotions or to influence others.

Our purpose in engaging on a certain
communication situation dictates the way we choose
our words, language, organization of the ideas to be
conveyed and the of delivery.

Types of Speech: According to Purpose

Speeches may be classified based on the


purpose set by the speaker before engaging in
communication, especially the ones conducted
in front of an audience. These three types of
speech have some similarities and some distinct
features.

1. Informative Speech
• It seeks to deliver factual and useful
information to the audience.

• This type of speech relies on the expertise of


the speaker who serves as the source of
information.

Teacher discussing a lesson in


class or a demonstrative videos
from the internet.

2. Persuasive Speech
• This type of speech aims to influence the audience by
presenting facts embedded with logic and reasoning.

• The goal of the speaker is to influence the beliefs of the


audience and stimulate them into action.

• It makes use of the charisma, reputation and fame as secret


ingredients in convincing the audience.

TV commercials advertising
products, promodiser endorsing a
merchandise or politician on a
campaign.

3. Speeches for Special Occasions
• These speeches solely depends on the purpose of
the speaker on a given event or gathering.

• It can be informative, persuasive, motivational or


entertaining. Its nature may vary and overlap with
two or more characteristics depending on the goal
of the speaker

Example:

•Tribute Speech – a speech that celebrates or


honor a person, place or event.

•Toast – it is the act of posing a drink


accompanied by message of good luck.

•Eulogy – a speech that seeks to honor and celebrate the life of a
dead person.

•Introductory Speech – a simple speech intended to welcome a


person usually a keynote speaker or a guests by stressing his
achievements.

•Commencement Speech – these are speeches that aim to inspire


graduating students.

•Acceptance Speech – a brief speech which seeks to express gratitude


in receiving an award.
