AREA OF INTEREST
CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY
INTRODUCTION: 4

1.Concrete is a construction material composed of cement , fine

aggregates and coarse aggregates mixed with water which hardens
with time.
2.Due to scarcity of fine aggregate there is need for the alternation.
3.In this study we prefer the recycled fine aggregate which we get
from the construction demolition waste because day by day
demolition of structures is highly enormous due to the age of building
and poor construction techniques.
4.According to Building Material Promotion council (BMPTC) ,
India generates an estimated 150 million tonnes of construction and
demolition (C &D) waste every year .
5.By using recycled fine aggregate as a fine aggregates it will be
environmental friendly and also solution for demand of fine
aggregate .

LITERATURE REVIEW
PAPER 1 9

JOURNAL: American society of civil engineering (ASCE)

AUTHORS: S K kirthika ,S K Singh and Ajay Chourasia (2020)
TITLE: Performance of recycled fine aggregate concrete using novel mix
proportioning method
OUTCOME:
1.Performance of concrete has been enriched by different mixing approaches
including double mixing ,two stage mixing and triple mixing
2.Superplasticizer is used to increase the workability of the concrete
3.It can be seen that as the volume fraction of RFA increases the slump decreases
4.As the percentage of RFA increases the mechanical properties decreases ;however
this reduction in properties can be adjusted with addition of certain admixture in
the concrete mixes using this newly developed mix proportion.
PAPER 2 10

JOURNAL : Construction and building material

AUTHOR : Hammad Salahuddin, Adnan Nawaz (2020)
TITLE : Effect of recycled fine aggregate on performance of reactive
OUTCOME :
1.Water absorption increases with an increase in the amount of recycled
material
2.It has been generally observed that the compressive strength of concrete
decrease slightly as the percentage of RFA increases.
3.The dosage of superplasticizer should be kept in the range of 0.5% -
2.5%
PAPER 3 11

JOURNAL : Construction and building materials

AUTHOR: S K Singh , S K kirthika (2020)
TITLE: Durability studies on recycled fine aggregate concrete
OUTCOME:
1.Msand is replaced by RFA in the proportion of 25%,50% and 100% in
concrete
2.Porosity increases as the percentage of RFA raises
3.Increase in RFA content decreases the resistance of the carbonation
4.RFA content and porosity is majority influenced the durability of the
concrete.
12
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
1. Excessive use of natural resources is causing serious environmental impacts
and depletion of natural resources.
2. Enormous construction ,demolition and industrial waste is being generated
and creates numerous environmental problems such as Discharge of
dust ,land space consumption, soil pollution etc .
3. Area of landfills is increasing rapidly in order to accommodate for increase
incoming C and D waste .
OBJECTIVES 13

1. To characterize recycled fine aggregates physically and chemically to be used as

construction material in concrete.
2. To assess the performance of RFA based concrete and controlled concrete with
different mixing approach.
3. Assessing the fresh property like workability of recycled fine aggregates (RFA)
based concrete with varying percentages of RFA and comparing it with
controlled concrete.
4. Assessing the hardened properties such as compressive strength of recycled fine
aggregates (RFA) based concrete with varying percentages of RFA and
comparing it with controlled concrete.
5. To optimize the percentage of replacement of recycled fine aggregates (RFA) in
concrete.
6. Microstructural analysis of RFA based concrete , controlled concrete to assess
hydration behaviour .

CONCLUSION
• The physical properties of recycled fine aggregate is same as that of
natural fine aggregate.
• The water absorption of recycled fine aggregate is 6.25% more than
that of natural fine aggregate.
• The workability of recycled aggregate concrete increases with the
increase in percentage of replacement of recycled fine aggregate in
conventional mixing as compared to that of triple mixing in controlled
concrete.
• The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete at 7 days
increases with increase in percentage of replacement of recycled fine
aggregate till 50% and at 100% replacement it decreases as compared
to the controlled concrete.
