St. Andrew's Church in Kiev is a unique


museum of history, painting and decorative
arts of the 18th century. It was created in
1754 by the famous Italian architect
Francesco Rastrelli and still preserves the
authentic architecture and most of the
exterior and interior decoration. Nowadays it
is the functioning church of the Ukrainian
Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The
building of world significance is interesting
not only as a luxurious historical cathedral,
but also as an example of an Orthodox
church interior of the Baroque period.
EXTERIOR

The single-domed church with four


towers is built in the form of a cross.
The emerald coloured top has many
gilded elements. In combination
with the white-blue walls, elegant
moulding and ornamentation, the
structure has a solemn appearance.
For decoration of the church
Rastrelli used nearly 100 tons of cast
iron. The steep cast-iron staircase
leads to the temple. Around the
building - a spacious viewing
platform from which picturesque
landscapes of Kiev on the slopes of
the Dnieper can be seen. Nearby is
the Andriyivsky Uzviz (Andrew's
Descent), a colourful street museum
that features the work of Ukrainian
artists.

The interior of the church is bright and spacious. The rich colour range,
decorative moulding on the walls and under the dome, luxurious gilding
and wood carving create a magnificent atmosphere in the church.
The iconostasis has 39 authentic, highly artistic icons from the 18th
century. The main decoration of the church has a festive red background,
gilded carving, sculptural compositions and paintings.
The most monumental composition of the temple is a 19th century
painting. "The Sermon of St. Andrew". It weighs 170 kg.

-The St. Andrew's Church is situated on a 5
geologically difficult hill, which is subject to
landslides and erosion by water, so it needs
constant reinforcement and specialist
attention.
-According to chronicles, the first preacher of
Christianity in Kievan Rus, Andrey
Pervozvanny, erected a cross and predicted the
creation of a big city on this very spot.
-The church does not have a bell tower, as the
loud sound of bells can cause displacement of
soils and destroy the building.
- The building of St. Andrew's Church is
included in the catalogue "1000 Wonders of
the World. Masterpieces of humanity from 5
continents". The Ukrainian community has
made a proposal to add the valuable
monument to the UNESCO World Heritage
List.
- The building is situated on a hill in such a
way that from anywhere - from the foot, from
the Andriyivsky Uzviz or from the centre of
Podol - the church seems to float gently in the
