PROJECT INITIATION AND PROJECT

DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT INITIATION
WHAT IS PROJECT INITIATION?
 Project initiation is the first step in
starting a new project.
 It is the first phase of the project
management life cycle and in this
stage, companies decide if the project
is needed and how beneficial it will be
for them.
 The term “project initiation” comes
from a five-phase model created by
the Project Management Institute
(PMI).

PROJECT INITIATION vs. PROJECT
PLANNING
 Initiation comes before planning. It’s
often focused on the broader reasoning
for a project — think of it like the
“pitch” before a project is approved.
Once that happens, the planning phase
is about nailing down all the finer
details so that work can actually begin.
WHY DOES PROJECT INITIATION PHASE
MATTER?

 Starting a new project is exciting, but

it’s important to make sure your
initiative will actually add value before
jumping into the planning phase.
Project initiation also ensures that you
loop in stakeholders early on, so you
can secure essential resources, gain
visibility for your project, and prevent
costly roadblocks down the road.
IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT
INITIATION PHASE

 Project managers assemble a project

team and create project documentation
to convince stakeholders of the project’s
value.
 Project management team can continue
with the project planning, project
execution and project monitoring phases
until the project is completed.
 Projects simply can’t start without a
proper project management initiation
phase.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

Project development involves organizing

and planning all the variables that go into a
project, including deciding materials,
creating a budget and creating tasks for
team members.
It also involves the processes needed to
complete a project, like changing the plans
throughout project completion and
identifying areas of improvement to help
the project run more smoothly

2.PLANNING start to finish. To create your outline, first decide the tasks that you want
each team member to complete. Then, add details about their
responsibilities regarding the project and the deadline for each task.

any areas where the project may need improvement.

4.CONTROL  it's important to ensure that your team members follow the

 it's useful to create a project report that details how well the
5.CLOSING project development plan guided your team. This report can give
you an idea of what elements within the project plans worked best
for your team, and which areas need improvement.
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TIPS
1. INFORM
STAKEHOLDERS
 It's important to keep stakeholders informed of all decisions and plans.
Try to notify them of the materials, timeline and goals of the project once
you complete the project plan.

2. KEEP YOUR TEAM

INLOVED
 They may offer valuable advice on how to approach the project, and they
can help you brainstorm ideas for project planning, since they likely have
first-hand experience of working on projects related to the one you're
developing

3. SEEK FEEDBACK

 It's useful to be open to feedback so that you can make any changes
that may help the project run more smoothly.
