Macromolecules
 Molecules in living systems are composed of
thousands of atoms, forming large, complex
molecules, known as macromolecules.
Polymers
 Many macromolecules
are long, chain-like
molecules formed by
smaller molecules
covalently bonded
together
Monomers
 Monomers are the smaller molecules that join
to form polymers.
 They can exist individually or as units of a
polymer
Biological Macromolecules
 We will be studying the structure and function
of four major classes of macromolecules:
• Carbohydrates
• Lipids
• Proteins
• Nucleic Acids
