MEANING OF
TORTOR SOMBAH
Tortor Sombah is a dance originating from Simalungun, dedicated to
welcoming the king or welcoming guests and close relatives, this dance
can be considered as a tribute to guests and their entourage. When the
tortor is finished being shown, then the others can dance something
they want. Tortor sombah has long lived in the midst of society with the
term "worship". This dance is a very unique dance, emphasizing the
balance and stability of footsteps and body movements when
performing prayers at a moderate level, as well as at a lower (low)
level.

FUNCTION
The Tor-tor Sombah functions as a ceremonial dance, which is used to
welcome kings in ancient times and welcome guests who are glorified
today. In addition, the Tor-tor Sombah dance can also be performed
during the Simalungun people's party, namely the Rondang Bintang
Party (PRB), which is a traditional party after the harvest season to
express gratitude for the success of the main harvest.

TORTOR SOMBAH
MUSIC
The Tor-Tor Sombah is accompanied by a traditional Simalungun drum called
longish Balon or longish sipitu-pitu or gondrang etek or gondrang sidua-dua
combined with sarunei with a distinctive song containing religion, namely
rambing-rambing. Generally this dance is accompanied by music that uses gual
parahot-parahot or gual rambing-rambing and uses the gonrang sipitu-pitu,
ogung, mingmong, sarunei and sitalasayak musical instruments.
TORTOR SOMBAH MOVEMENT
In general, this position of worship is shown in two
04 plays: 1) the body is standing with the head down
(bowing), the palms are open and pressed together
and placed in front of the face that is bowing and the
body (torso) is slightly inclined (bent forward), 2) the
body is totally bent, the palms are open and placed in
front of the head and the head is down so that the
play tends to 'as if kissing' the ground.

DEVELOPMENT
OF SOMBAH TORTOR
Developments also occurred in the dancers, previously they were
often danced singly, then in pairs, then in groups. In addition, the
floor pattern also develops according to the number of dancers.
The same thing happened in the case of dancers' clothing
experiencing developments. In the past, the tortor sombah
dancers in their performances often wore traditional Simalungun
clothing, but now they are wearing modified or modern
Simalungun clothing.
