Demographic Affairs

A total number of 121 farmers were asked for conducting the survey. Our core findings
were the age distribution, level of education of the farmers, living standards of the
households and children involved in education. In this report, the education level of the
farmers on basis of their age and the ratio of male and female involvement in agriculture are
shown. Living standards are determined on three issues of the households. They are
Sanitation, Housing Quality and Water Source. All these issues are further classified i.e. for
Sanitation: Hygienic/Open/Close, for Housing: Pacaa/Semi Pacca/Tin Shed/ Kacha, for
Water Source: Own Deep Tube Well or Other sources. In addition, expectancy of children
and their involvement percentage are also covered.

Costings of Crop Production

The main objective of the survey was to find out the production costs of Rice, Potato and
Onion in various districts. Our survey could cover the different sector wise costs i.e.
Cleaning Costs, Ploughing Costs, Tractor Oil Costs, Seeding Costs, Fertilizer Costs,
Pesting Costs, Harvesting Costs, Irrigation Costs, Transportation Costs, Processing and
Storing Costs along with the total costs needed to produce the crops. However, after
studying the gathered information it was found that Transportation Costs, Processing and
Storing Costs and Cleaning Costs do not vary at a high extent even a large number
farmers did not mention these costs. In order to being precise and make an accurate
decision we took six core costs which are as follows:

 Ploughing Costs
 Seeding Costs
 Pesting Costs
 Fertilizer Costs
 Harvesting Costs
 Irrigation Costs
Costings of Crop Production

Average Calculation Process

 Total 121 farmers were selected among them 74 farmers cultivated rice, 65
farmers cultivated potato and 68 farmers cultivated onion whereas among these
farmers 35 farmers cultivated all the three crops simultaneously.
 As 8 districts were covered in the survey so average costing of various sectors
are taken for draw conclusion for every district
 Every types of costs from different farmers were calculated for 100 decimal
land for every district
 Next a simple arithmetic mean was calculated for all costs for 100 decimal land
 In case of total production and net total costs for every district, same procedure
was followed

The Scenario

o In Magura,
Coriander Leaves, Onion, Jute and Pulses are highly profitable.
The Scenario

On the one hand, small farmers do not rely on only crops and vegetables cultivation. In most of the
cases, it has been found small farmers make their living mainly on poultry farming and dairy project.
According to them, it takes less human effort, less land and above all they find profit all around the
year.
Conclusion

The conducted survey does not create a full image of the total production situation
of rice, potato and onion as the survey was conducted only in 8 districts among 121
farmers whereas some of the farmers cultivated all the three crops. Most
significantly the information collected from each district was not equal in number
so, the average calculation does not show maximum accuracy on every type of costs
and aspects. Though the survey is not a comprehensive one, it still shows
approximate production costs of the three crops rice, onion and potato. Moreover,
we get the knowledge about the proportional amount of cultivation of different crops
in different districts. In addition, a demographic review of the farmer’s household
has been represented that shows their social condition. Finally, it can be said this
survey gives us a concise but precise idea about the production costs and
productivity of different crops in different regions.
