Profile of Kochi
• Kochi is situated on the south-west coast of the India in the state of
Kerala, hailed as 'God's Own Country'. Its strategic importance over the
centuries is underlined by the name as ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. 
• From time immemorial, the Arabs, British, Chinese, Dutch, and
Portuguese have left indelible marks on the history and development
of Cochin. 
• Kochi is the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala and is perhaps
the second most important city on the west coast of India.
• It is Kerala's prime tourist destination
• Successive waves of migration over the course of several millennia
have made Kochi a cultural melting pot.

The common features of Slums in the city

THURUTHY

Situated in ward number 2 (Kalvathy) of Kochi corporation


Profile of Thuruthy.
 Thuruthy Colony comprises parts of the colonies of Thuruthy,
Kalvathy and Konchery, in Fort Kochi (Kochi) and is located very
close to the busy street connecting the Heritage Tourism Centre at
Fort Kochi and the Trade Centre of Mattancherry. They have a
combined area of 40 acres.
 They occupy the heart of the Fort Kochi area, which is 12 km away
from the Ernakulam city. The area is in close proximity to the sea,
with the main canal running around Thuruthy – the Kalvathy canal –
directly joining the backwaters.

 Housing Condition:
◦ A large number of houses are in dilapidated conditions,
with a high density of occupants in a single household
◦ Many houses are congested and clustered around each
other, in narrow layouts, with many of them
inaccessible for vehicles.

Selection Criteria for Thuruthy.
 Density of population is greater than 200 persons/acre.
 Located within and in proximity to solid waste dumps,
open drains, canals.
 99% of the beneficiaries are under minority community and
74 % families are BPL.
 The location is prone to water-logging, accumulation of
drainage/waste-water.
 92% of the families are working in unorganized sector.
 68% families are in semi pucca and 24 % are in kutcha
houses.
 67 % families depend on the public water system.
 92 % families do not have the pattas and only 43 % have
possession certificate.

Infrastructure and Sanitation
◦ Kalvathy canal, which surrounds the colony, is highly
contaminated and polluted
◦ Public transportation is not available, so people have to walk
more than 1.5km to access their daily needs
◦ Open drains and canals are polluted, thereby increasing the
chances of spreading diseases
◦ Schools are very far from the slum and only one School is
available inside.

◦ Septic wastes are directly disposed into drainage channels

 Goal: To improve the quality of life of urban poor in theState

 Aim: To improve the living conditions and infrastructure facilities of

the people in the colony

 Objectives
 To assess the quality of housing and efficiency of physical
infrastructure services in Thuruthy.

infrastructure services in the area.

Solidwaste will be collected from each


household and bio-degradable wastes will be
composted at the Solid Waste treatment centre.
Non bio-degradable wastes will be segregated.
Compost can be used for gardening
FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM

G+11 buildings will be well equipped


with all modern fire fighting facilities
Considering the density and narrow
roads, fire hydrants are provided to the
entire slum area, where Fire Engines
wouldn’t reach.
WATER SUPPLY

Household connections shall be given to

LANDSCAPING
 A waste dumping land on the roadside is proposed to be
converted into a park by landscaping it. Additionally, stalls
and kiosks shall also be included.
 The open yard of the G+11 buildings will also be
landscaped.

Implementation Schedule

• The project is planned to be executed in 36


months.
•The tendering will be through a transparent
process.
•Transit accommodation will not be required
since the G+11 bocks can be built in two phases
•The quality control and assurance for the project
is the responsibility of the Kudumbashree and the
Engineering Department of the Corporation of
Cochin.
