WHAT IS IT?
Noun phrase (NP) consists of
nominal head ( normally noun
or pronoun) with or without
the modifiers before or after it.
Noun phrase has just two
immediate constituents DET
( determiner) and NOM
(nominal)

Determiners are words somewhat


like adjectives in that they come
before a noun.
Determiners include: NP

+ The articles (ART): a, an, or the


+ Demonstratives ( DEM): this, that, DET NOM

+ Quantifiers (QA): some, any, no,
each, every, either, neither…

Any language unit that


functions as a noun is
called Nominal.
2.1. Pre-modifiers in NOM:
There are four major structural types of pre-modifiers:

• Adjective phrases: the commonest pre-modifiers of the noun


Ex: A luxurious hotel
• -ed participial: the progressive, perfect, passive participles
(V- part)
Ex: The broken window in the room.

2.2. Post-modifiers in NOM:

• The most complex types of phrases.

• Not only do they have two possible constituents before


the head noun (determiners and pre-modifiers).
• Give extra or specific information about the noun.
Including five parts:
• Prepositional Phrases

• Adjective Phrases

• Participial Phrases

• Infinitive Phrases

• Subordinate Adjective Clauses


Ex: The blue cotton shirt that I borrowed from my brother.

VERB PHRASE
What is a verb phrase (VP)?
- The one constituent of sentence.
- Must contain the VERB GROUP (Vgrp).

- Contains other words (Modifier, Complement)


VERB GROUP (Vgrp)
● Lexical verb ● Auxiliary verb

● The girl smiles ● The girl is smiling


● I live in America ● I have lived in America
● Tim marry his girl friend ● Tim will marry his girl friend

- One lexical verd


- Up to four auxiliary verbs, besides the negative work (NOT)

E.g: the criminal may not have been being interrogated


Modifiers

- The adverbial adjuncts provide


information about action, the
event,…
- Can be omitted affecting the
sentence (one-way dependency
btw Vgrp)
E.g: The baby was sleeping (soundly).

E.g: Phil had lost his leather wallet (beside a


stream).
Complement
What is the complement?
- The parts that add information to the
sentence become clearer about the meaning

- Cannot be omitted (two-way dependency btw


Vgrp)
E.g The cat chases a rat

E.g The boy are lying on his bed


TYPES OF VERBS
1. Intransitive VP = Vgrp 2. Transitive VP = Vgrp + NP
e.g: The police have identified
e.g: The man sunbathed the victims

3. Ditransitive VP =Vgrp + O 4. Complex Transitive VP
