EFFECT OF YARN TWIST ON

FABRIC APPEARANCE
WHAT IS YARN TWIST?
Twist is simply the spiral arrangement of fibers around the axis
of the yarn. Through twisting, the fibers are bound together and
create a to form a stronger yarn. It is denoted as turns per inch or
turns per metre. There are 2 types of twist mainly :-
  S-twist:
The anti-clockwise twist of yarn is called s-twist. The inclination of fibres in
yarn looks similar to the middle part of the English letter “S”. It is also called as
left hand twist.
       Z-twist:
The clockwise twist of yarn is called z-twist. The inclination of fibres in the yarn
looks similar to the middle part of English letter Z. It is also called as right hand
twist.
EFFECTS OF TWIST ON YARN & FABRIC PROPERTIES

In the case of Aesthetic effects :

1) Thelevel of twist in yarn alters its appearance both by
changing the thickness and light reflecting properties.
2) Different patterns can be produced in a fabric by using similar
yarns but with different twist levels.
3) A shadow stripe fabric can be produced in weaving by using
alternate S&Z twisted yarns.
4) Yarn twist also effects the light reflecting property of the
fabric. Fabric with a low twisted yarn will have uniform
reflection whereas in case of the high twisted yarn that will start
reflecting the yarn with of the reflecting the light of it will
scattered the light.
 Twist is also related to Bending rigidity.
 Yarn twist also effects Yarn pilling property .
 Higher the yarn twist it produces a relatively harder yarn and
the fabric becomes more stiff and lower the yarn twist the
softer is the yarn produced.
 Yarn twist also changes the appearance of the twill fabric.
S-Twill:
When the twill runs from the lower right to the upper left
corner, the twill is known as a left-hand twill.
Z-Twill:
When the diagonal line runs from the lower left corner to the
upper right corner, the twill is known as a right-hand twill.
About85% of all twill-woven fabrics are right-hand twill.
 Yarn twist also effects the cover factor of a fabric due to the
change in diameter of the yarn.
FABRICS MADE BY APPLICATION
OF DIFFERENT LEVEL OF TWISTS

1) Georgette is made of highly twisted

yarn(upto1000TPM) by weaving S and Z twisted
yarns alternately.
2)Chiffon is made in the same way but yarn is more
twisted(up to 2000TPM) and more finer than
georgette yarn.
3)Herringbone is made by using yarns of different
types and levels of twists.
4) Voile is a fabric of plain weave with hard twisted
single yarn. Twist is in the range of 30-40 TPI.
