What is Poetry ?
Poetry is a type of literature, or artistic
writing, that attempts to stir a reader's
imagination or emotions. The poet does this
by carefully choosing and arranging
language for its meaning, sound, and
rhythm. Some poems, such as nursery
rhymes, are simple and humorous.

Author: Charles Perrault
• In 1697, Charles
Perrault published a
collection of folktales
with the subtitle “Contes
de ma mère l'oye” (Tales
from my Mother Goose),
which became beloved
throughout France and
was translated into
English in 1729.

The story tells of how
Mother Goose is about
to be thrown off her land
because she cannot pay
the Squire and her
Bailiffs the rent. Along
comes Priscilla the
goose. Mother Goose
loves her as a friend and
doesn't know the good
fairy has sent her to help
Mother Goose. Priscilla
lays golden eggs, and
Mother Goose is rich.

Author: Edward Lear
British landscape painter
and writer, wrote many
limericks and
"nonsenses" for children.
One of his most famous
nonsense poems is "The
Owl and the Pussy-Cat,"
shown here in his hand:

"The Owl and the Pussy-
Cat". The poem was

"The Owl and the
Pussy-cat" features
four anthropomorphic
animals – an owl, a
cat, a pig, and a
turkey – and tells the
story of the love
between the title
characters who marry
in the land "where the
Bong-tree grows".

twenty-four words in
the poem that were

Carroll.

In "Jabberwocky,"
Carroll uses
nonsensical words
throughout a typical
ballad form to tell a
tale of good versus
evil, which
culminates in the
killing of the
fearsome
Jabberwock. 11
Author: No singular
author can be
credited. The French
author Charles
Perrault collected
these tales together,
and published them
for the very first time
in 1697. Because of
this he is generally
considered to be the
father of the fairy tale
genre. 12
Little Red Riding Hood"
by Charles Perrault tells
of a young girl who
comes across a cunning
wolf on the way to her
grandmother's home.
The wolf deceives both
her and her
grandmother and eats
them, a grim ending for
the protagonist of the
story. This version, by
Charles Perrault, was
first published in France
in 1697. 13
Author:Life Doesn't
Frighten Me is a
children's book by
American
writer Maya

released in 1993 by
Stewart, Tabori, &

The poem
thus celebrates
children's courage
and bravado and
suggests that
learning to “smile” in
the face of fear can
be a source of real
power.
