Electrodynamometer

2
Electrodynamic Type Instruments
( Electrodynamometer)
Construction:
-This instrument is constructed based
on two coils (fixed coil and moving
coil). The magnetic field is produced
by a fixed coil. This coil is divided
into two sections to give more
uniform field near the center. The
moving coil is a spring controlled
and has a pointer attached to it.
-This instrument may be used as an
ammeter or may become a voltmeter
by adding a series resistance.

3
Principle of operation
For linear motion:
f (force) B (flux density) I (current)
B (flux)
fI
For rotational motion:
T (torque) I

4
Torque equation:
The operating torque is produced by the reaction between the magnetic
field of the fixed coils and the current through the moving coil.

: deflection torque
: the current in the fixed coil
: the current in the moving coil
M : mutual inductance between the fixed and the moving coils.

- Electrodynamometer instrument can operate
for DC or AC quantities.
For DC operation:

: DC current in the fixed coil

: DC current in the moving coil
Controlling torque :
With a spring constant K, the controlling torque
provided by the spring for a final steady-state deflection
of θ is given by
= Kθ
- At balance: =

For AC operation:

: the rms value of the current in the fixed coil

: the rms value of the current in the moving coil
: the phase angle between &

Electrodynamometer Voltmeter:
The electrodynamometer movement is used as a
voltmeter by connecting the fixed and moving coils in
series with a high resistance.

For DC operation:

For AC operation:
