What understanding
can you draw from
the activity?
 You can create new substances when combining
elements to form compounds and a mixture is formed
when combining two or more substances.
 When different substances are mixed, different
characteristics and properties are observed.
What understanding
can you draw from
the activity?
 People use different substances in their daily life
which are important for survival such as cooking
a delicious food.
What understanding
can you draw from
the activity?
Note:
 However, not all substances can be used in
cooking.
 The ingredients used in cooking a specific food
menu are based on their set of properties.
How are you going to relate the
activity to our lesson
on pure substances and
mixtures?
Just like in cooking, all substances cannot be used in
all aspects. Substances are used according to their set
of properties. Thus, it is important that we classify
pure substances and mixtures according to their set of
properties.

MIXTURE
(Important Concepts to
Remember)
PURE  A pure substance is
composed of a single
SUBSTANCE substance, either an
element or a compound.
 The atoms of the elements
(Important Concepts to in a compound are
Remember) chemically bonded.
 Pure substances have
definite composition and
distinct chemical
properties.
PURE
SUBSTANCE substances are:
 The properties of pure

a) homogeneous or uniform in
(Important Concepts to appearance
Remember) b) fix boiling point
c) melts completely or
smoothly
MIXTURES  A mixture is composed of two
or more substances.
(Important Concepts to  The atoms of the constituent
substances in a mixture are
Remember)
physically combined and are
not chemically bonded.

b) no fix boiling point
c) do not melt completely

 Homogeneous mixture
MIXTURES - components cannot be distinguished
from each other, appear as one
substance, particles are evenly
(Important Concepts to distributed
Remember)
 Heterogeneous mixture
- all components of the mixture are
visible because they do not mix
together, particles are not evenly
distributed

1. Examine the pictures provided to
you.
GROUP 2. Classify them as pure substance or
mixture.
ACTIVITY 3. Create a collage of pictures for pure
substances and another for mixtures.
4. You are given 5 minutes to complete
the task.
•Mixtures VS. 5. After the activity, you will check and
•Pure Substances comment on the accuracy of your
partner group.

GAMIFICATION
Stop the Music:
An artificial flower is passed on from one
student to another while a music is
playing. Once the music stops, the last
one holding the flower will identify
whether the properties shown on the tv
screen refer to pure substance or mixture.

Pure Substance
Materials are used depending on their
properties? How do the uses of gold depend
on its properties?
 In its pure form, gold is a bright, slightly reddish yellow,
dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal. It will not rust
and is non-toxic.
 Gold is used as conductors of electricity as it does not
tarnish so it last longer and remains conducive for a
longer period of time.
Materials are used depending on their
properties? How do the uses of gold depend
on its properties?

As gold is ductile, gold is also alloyed in jewelry

to increase its strength. The term carat refers to
the amount of gold present in the jewelry.
