Soon you will be asked to go to a beach and give it a rating.

A rating is used to make an assessment of something.

Example: You might rate a film:


Observations
You will be asked to observe a beach and use a rating system to give the beach
an Overall grade.

The Higher the score the better the beach is.

The score will allow us to make an overall assesment of the beach is it a healthy
or sick beach.

Observations happen when you use your senses:

So when you get to the beach you will need to use your senses and the rating
system to give the beach a score and a grade.
Rating the Beach-Beach Material
Sand Softness
Water temperature.
Size of Breaking Waves
Turbidity-How clear is the water?
Water Colour
Floating/Suspended Human material (SewagePollution)
Algae in Water
Smell (Eg: Seaweed, Rotting Fish)
Wildlife (Shore Birds)
Pests:
JellyFish
Trash and Litter
Views and Vistas
Access to the Beach
Well Kept Grounds/promenades/Natural Environment
Vegetation
Amenities (Showers, toilets, Chairs etc)
Lifeguards
Noise
Intensity of beach
Public Safety
Overall Rating
Once you have observed all the differnet rating caetgories at your site it will be
time to add up your results. The highre the rating total the better the beach. An
average score for each category may help as well when you discuss your overall
rating.
Assessment Criteria

You will have to create a report about your field trip. The grading of this report will
be discussed in class by going through the rubric. If you have any questions
please do not hesitate to ask.
