SECTION D: Conventional Questions (45 %)

1. Read the following article about virtual keyboard and answer the questions that follow.

Researchers have developed a virtual keyboard that can be projected onto any flat surface.
The keyboard provides a mobile solution to keyboard data entry.

Because the keyboard is projected, it is also said to be ideal for use in sterile environments
such as clean rooms and hospital operating theatres.

The keyboard is projected onto a surface using a red-emitting diode laser. It is full size and
the letters are in a standard format. The output power of the laser is below the level at which
eye injury will occur. Infrared sensing is used to detect the users’ hand movements over the
keyboard. Rechargeable batteries similar to those in mobile phones power the device.

(a) Name the two types of electromagnetic wave used by the virtual keyboard device. (2 marks)

(b) Why the virtual keyboard device does not work well on a very smooth surface like a plane mirror?
