1. The electromagnetic wave with greater amplitude or ___________________ carries more energy.
2. __________________ are formed by the dispersion of white light from the Sun by the raindrops.
3. When the ______________ molecules inside the food absorb the microwaves, they vibrate vigorously.
8. When the observer stands on the side of a swimming pool, the __________________ depth of the pool is
always less than the real depth.
9. ___________________ are usually used to replace plane mirror in order to prevent the formation of
multiple images.
1. Black color can be produced by mixing all the secondary color of light together.
5. When a ray of light strikes the mirror normally, the angle of incidence is 90°.
6. The direction of the light ray must change when it travels from one medium to another.
8. It is easier for total internal reflection to occur if the critical angle is smaller.

1. Read the following article about virtual keyboard and answer the questions that follow.
Researchers have developed a virtual keyboard that can be projected onto any flat surface.
The keyboard provides a mobile solution to keyboard data entry.
Because the keyboard is projected, it is also said to be ideal for use in sterile environments
such as clean rooms and hospital operating theatres.
The keyboard is projected onto a surface using a red-emitting diode laser. It is full size and
the letters are in a standard format. The output power of the laser is below the level at which
eye injury will occur. Infrared sensing is used to detect the users’ hand movements over the
keyboard. Rechargeable batteries similar to those in mobile phones power the device.
(a) Name the two types of electromagnetic wave used by the virtual keyboard device. (2 marks)
(b) Why the virtual keyboard device does not work well on a very smooth surface like a plane mirror?
Briefly explain. (2 marks)

Draw a single ray diagram on Figure 2.1 to show how the observer can see the whole image. Hence, find
the minimum length of the plane mirror needed. (4 marks)
3. Jerry and Tom are playing hide-and-seek. In Figure 3.1, Tom is hiding behind an board such that Jerry
cannot see him in the mirror. Jerry can move forward (towards B) or backward (towards A) only.

(b) By drawing a reflected ray from Tom to the mirror, mark “K” at the position which Jerry should go
to in Figure 3.1. Hence, find the distance from Jerry to “K”. (6 marks)
