1.

Know that design principles still apply for any new design
(contrast of colors, shapes, and lines produces harmony) whether
done by hand or machine (computer). (A6EL-IIIa)
2. Understand that digital technology has speeded up the printing
of original designs and made it accessible to many, as emphasized
in t-shirts and poster designs. (A6PL-IIIb)
3. Apply concepts on the steps/procedure in silkscreen printing.
(A6PR-IIIc)
4. Produce own prints from original design to silkscreen printing to
convey a message or statement. (A6PR-IIId)
2 topics:
• Elements and Principles of Art Applied in New Design
• Silkscreen Printing
1. What is the difference between
figure 1 and figure 2?
2. Which one is done by hand?
3. Which one is done using a computer
software?
4. What elements and principles of art
are applied in both artworks?
The elements of art are the building blocks used by
artists to create a work of art (“E D Ucation
Understanding Formal Analysis Performing Arts in Art
Elements of Art.” 2011). The elements can be arranged
in a work to produce balance, harmony, unity, rhythm,
proportion, variety, emphasis, and movement. So the
principles of art are dependent on the elements.
No elements - no principles (“The Elements of Art.” n.d.

Color and Tone
Color is an element of art made up of three properties:
hue, value, and intensity.
• Hue: name of color
• Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value
changes when white or black is added)
• Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high
intensity= color is strong and bright; low intensity=color
is faint and dull)
Tone is simply the lightness or darkness of an object.
Sometimes referred to as value, tone is one of the most
powerful design elements. In any painting, photograph
or design, value or tonal contrast creates visual interest
or excitement in a painting.
Tones are created when grey is added to a color. The
final tone depends on the amount of black and white
used, and tones may be lighter or darker than the
original hue.
Colors make drawing or painting attractive and beautiful. But using a single color
may not be very pleasing.
Blending several colors to form a new color makes the artwork more attractive.

Blending colors may be done manually. There are also computer programs that
allowyou to blend color easily.
Shapes
Shapes are typically two-dimensional, meaning they
only have length and width.
However, not all shapes will be classified as the same
type. You are able to classify shapeseither as geometric
or organic and also define shapes by being positive or
negative.
Depending on the message and intention of the artist,
each shape will uniquely take on the characteristics of
these different classifications.
If you look around, many objects are formed from different shapes. Even those
that you think have no regular shapes are formed from a shape. New artists learn
how to draw by using shapes first. Look at the figures below.
Whenever you create a design, all elements and
principles of art are applied. Whether you do it
manually or with the help of a computer program,
the elements and principles are applied.
SILKSCREEN PRINTING
Printmaking is the process of art creation with the use of a
carved screen to transfer ink onto another surface. It is
often an interesting activity for young learners like you.
Even if you are not born as an artist, you can still achieve
unexpected results using a few simple materials.
In the past, creating customized shirt with your own
unique design would be difficult and expensive. But with
the help of technology, one can create a personalized
design and create a masterpiece through various
techniques.
What is silkscreen printing?
Silkscreen printing is one of the methods in printmaking. It
uses a stencil to apply ink onto another material. It can be
on fabric or t-shirts. It can be on paper, wood, vinyl, or any
other material that absorbs ink.
Now, with new tools, printing of designs had become
faster and easier. These designs can be printed on t-shirts
and posters. Even if digital technology has made printing
faster, the design principles like the contrast of colors,
shapes, and lines should produce harmony just
like hand printing.
Using technology, printing of original designs has been
made easier and faster.
The creation of the design, using computer program is
easier. The production is even made faster with the
silkscreen printing machine. This machine allows the
printing of several colors on a t-shirt.
This kind of technology speeded-up the printing of
designs on t-shirts. It can also be used to print on
posters.
What are the materials needed in silkscreen printing?
1. The Design
You can draw a design with your own hands or use computer software
to generate the artwork and print in a transparency.
2. The Mesh Screen
A screen will be required to make the stencil, through which the ink
will pass onto your shirt.
It can be bought from a store, or you can build one for yourself. You
can use either wood or aluminum to make the frame. The screens
should be large enough to accommodate the designs. For designs of
standard detail, 110 mash count should serve well, however, for more
detailed design a screen of higher mash count will be required.
3. Liquid Emulsion
The screen needs to be coated with the liquid chemical called
the emulsion. It is sensitive to light and becomes most
sensitive when dry.
4. Fabric paint
Some basic colors will need to be purchased to get things
underway.
5. Squeegee
This is a material used for spreading fabric paint in the screen.
